Boise Fire Department serves a population of over 300,000 residents. This includes a population of 241,590 in Idaho’s capital city*, 12,570 in Garden City*, and over 50,000 residents living in the unincorporated areas of the Whitney and North Ada County fire districts. Emergency services are delivered from 18 fire stations strategically located throughout the city covering a 130 square mile response area.

This challenge coin is requisitioned to us by the Station 4 of the Boise Fire Department, located on the Ustick Road, and infamously nicknamed the ‘Ustick Express’. This nickname is immortalized in a really cool logo that has a steam locomotive as the main graphic, and a really fitting logotype that make the whole design to have a sports-team feel to it. So we just used that logo on one side of the coin, and on the other we put the insignia of the Station 4.

What makes this challenge coin to look very modern looking, is that the basic shape is based on the outlines of the Fire Department insignia. And also the choice of the material finish, polished silver colored metal, and the use of only 3 colors on both sides gives the whole look of the coin to be contemporary.

F&AM Challenge Coin

All Freemasons (F & AM and AF & AM) have their history from the building of the temple by King Solomon in biblical times. In the 1730s, Freemason was exported introduced to North America. The Moderns and the Ancients or Antients started to bring up daughter lodges and Grand Lodges were organized in various provinces. After the American Revolution occurred, there was a formation of independent Grand Lodges in each state.

F & AM (Free and Accepted Masons) commissioned us this challenge coin and this one of a classic & conventional design that we have crafted. Nothing overwhelming and unusual, just the logo on one side and the map of the world on the other, and some letterings to enclose them. So what can we do to make this coin to look grand and shine?

We needed to make sure that the layout of all of the design elements to be balanced, they should not overpowering each other. And the the rest is the technical execution. All the lines in the design should be carved at the right width to make sure the graphics and the letters are clearly shown. And finally, the choice of colors and the painting process need to done impeccably to give this challenge coin a perfect finish.

The design concept that makes this challenge coin to be unique and eye-catching, is that while the basic shape of the coin is just a rectangle, we made one of the side to be shaped organically that it gives the coin a whole new offbeat look. Other than that, we just needed to put the other details so they get along well as a whole design.

The brushed brass-colored metal gives the imposing overall look of this coin. The logotype engraved on one side of the coin is flawlessly executed, and the embossed & painted American flag on the other side give the coin a really nice and colorful accent. The ribbon put across the sides is a simple yet delicate finishing touch.

The 17th Cavalry Regiment is a historical organization within the United States Army that began as a regiment of cavalry after the Pancho Villa Expedition. Formerly a part of the 1950s Combat Arms Regimental System, it was reorganized as a part of the U.S. Army Regimental System, an ongoing effort to maintain the lineage and history of the U.S. Army through its units. Today, the 17th Cavalry Regiment is found across the army within the combat aviation brigades, where the squadrons, now constituted as attack/recon helicopter squadrons, carry on the legacy of the 17th Cavalry Regiment.

This challenge coin is commissioned to us by the 1st Squadron of the 17th Cavalry Regiment, a Heavy Attack Reconnaissance Squadron called SABER. They wanted a ‘wing’ as opposed to a common usual shaped challenge coin. And the basic concept of this coin is that pretty simple yet very distinctive, and really represent what the Airborne is all about.

We needed to make sure that all the details are crafted perfectly. From the feathers of the wings, to the lines & colors of the insignias, and the sculpted hilt of the sword, are all need to be executed smoothly that every detail is not missed.

Military Police Challenge Coin

The 46th Military Police Command is a command level military police headquarters element within the Michigan Army National Guard capable of training, deploying, and providing command and control for military police, corrections, and criminal investigation division (CID) units. Its mission is to provide command and control for the operational/tactical planning, supervision, coordination and integration of assigned or attached military police combat support and internment/resettlement brigades and other military police units engaged in Army, joint, and multinational military police operations in support of the Army/combatant commander’s priorities.

When they asked us to design and produce a custom challenge coin for them, we were really excited because they wanted nothing ordinary about it. They wanted a rectangular shaped coin, with a crossed flintlock pistols on top of it. Other than that, they wanted it be clean and unsophisticated, without any colors and paint.

The result is an amazing, vintage-looking and extraordinary challenge coin. Even without any bright colors or accents, the basic shape of the coin itself really stands out among other common coin or badges. Then when you look closely, you can notice that the insignias and the letterings are well engraved that even without paint on them, you can see and read everything clearly.
