USS John C. Stennis Buckle

USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74) is the seventh Nimitz-class nuclear-powered aircraft carrier and is named in honor of Senator John. C. Stennis of Mississippi. The mission of John C. Stennis and her air wing (CVW-9) is to conduct sustained combat air operations while forward-deployed.

The largest warships in the world, Nimitz-class aircraft carriers support and operate aircraft that engage in attacks on airborne, afloat, and ashore targets that threaten free use of the sea and engage in sustained power projection operations in support of U.S. and coalition forces. On October the 12th 2023, the aircraft carrier was having its birthday in Newport News Shipbuilding conducting Refueling and Complex Overhaul to prepare the ship for the second half of its 50-year service life.

We were given the task of manufacturing a custom belt buckle for their Operations specialist. We used the shape of a classic military belt buckle, which is a rectangle with a curved top and bottom. They wanted the buckle’s surface to be filled with an engraved image of the ship, and the United States flag as the background.

Constructing a customized belt buckle involves choosing the shape and the belt-tightening mechanism. We had to make sure the quality of parts used were high-quality materials because a belt buckle is an accessory that has a specific function and is used by a lot kind of people.

USS Bulkekey Challenge Coin

USS Bulkeley (DDG 84) is the 34th Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer in the United States Navy and is named after Vice Adm. John D. Bulkeley (1911-1996), who was a World War II Medal of Honor recipient. This ship is the 34th destroyer of its class and was the 15th ship of this class to be built at Ingalls Shipbuilding in Pascagoula, Mississippi, and construction began on 10 May 1999.

The destroyer is homeported in Rota, Spain, and assigned as a U.S. Navy Forward Deployed Naval Forces-Europe (FDNF-E) destroyer. FDNF-E ships have the flexibility to operate throughout the waters of Europe and Africa, from the Cape of Good Hope to the Arctic Circle, demonstrating their mastery of the maritime domain.

We were excited when they contacted us to build a unique custom challenge coin for the USS Bulkely’s Deckplate Leaders. Deckplate leaders are visible figureheads who set the tone, lead by example, know the mission, know their Sailors, and develop them beyond their own expectations as a team and as individuals.

They wanted something unorthodox for the coin. The basic shape of the coin was a torch with flaming fire, with some symbols and inscriptions engaged on it. The concept design was finalized by our graphic designers before it ran through our computerized machine and finished with high-quality paints and coating.

U.S. Public Health Service Coin

The United States Public Health Service is a collection of agencies of the Department of Health and Human Services concerned with public health, containing nine out of the department’s twelve operating divisions. Their medical, health, and engineering professionals fight disease, conduct research, and care for patients in underserved communities across the nation and throughout the world.

The USPHS originated in the system of marine hospitals that originated in 1798. In 1871 these were consolidated into the Marine Hospital Service, and shortly afterwards the position of Surgeon General and the PHSCC were established. As the system’s scope grew to include quarantine authority and research, it was renamed the Public Health Service in 1912.

They asked us to craft them a beautiful and elegant custom challenge coin. The design was classic and quite straightforward, with the shape of a round coin, with some relief of images and inscription etched on the field of the coin.

The challenging part was designing the encircling letterings of the officers’ names, which were engraved to the back side of the coin. We had to make sure everything was balanced out so the names were still readable but aesthetically placed. We used a dark brass color for the finish of the coin and applied some glossy paints on the USPHS logo and the American flag.

U.S. Navy QMC Challenge Coin

U.S. Navy QMC Challenge Coin

U.S. Navy QMC Challenge Coin

A US Navy QMC is a Chief Petty Officer in the quartermaster rating. Quartermasters (QMs) are the experts in shipboard navigation, including operating and maintaining the ship’s navigational equipment. They usually report to the ship’s Navigator, normally a junior officer. In many navies, a quartermaster is an officer with particular responsibility for steering and signals.

Navy quartermasters are petty officers, which means they are non-commissioned officers who report directly to a commanding officer. The Quartermaster is also responsible for acquiring and distributing the correct quantities of supplies to Army personnel. In this role, they coordinate both aerial and land delivery of required supplies such as food, water, material goods, and fuel.

We had a chance to build a custom coin challenge for a U.S. Navy Quartermaster officer. The coin was one-of-a-kind because it didn’t have the shape of a common round coin, but it was sculpted like a ship’s helm. They also requested that we could put an illustration of the officer, and also the United States Navy’s insignia on the center of the coin.

Our cutting-edge equipment could create any shape that was designed and prepared by our experienced graphic designers. The coin took the details found on a wooden ship’s steering wheel. You can see the details in the photos to the right.

U.S. Navy Cougars Squadron Coin

U.S. Navy Cougars Squadron Coin

Electromagnetic Attack Squadron 139 (VAQ-139), also known as the “Cougars”, is an EA-18G Growler squadron of the United States Navy. The Cougars of VAQ-139 became operational on 1 July 1983 under the command of CDR Richard A. Clark while flying the ICAP (Improved Capability) EA-6B Prowler.

The Cougars specialize in electromagnetic attacks and are currently stationed at Naval Air Station Whidbey Island, Washington. The Cougars led numerous missions deep into the Arabian Gulf and significantly contributed to the contingency planning in anticipation of Operation DESERT STORM.

They ordered a unique custom challenge coin from us and it’s quite different from the other coins we have made. They requested that the field of the coin be hollowed to form the shape of the head of a cougar, and then they wanted the cougar head to be spun in the center of the challenge coin.

Nothing is impossible to us as long as it isn’t against the law of physics. To make the cougar head spinnable, we had to construct a pivoting mechanism on the top and bottom of the cougar head sculpture. Luckily, our computerized cutting-edge machinery is able to execute such kind of detail, and as you can see in the photo to the right, the pivoting mechanism is not noticeable if you see it from afar.
