USS Bulkekey Challenge Coin
USS Bulkeley (DDG 84) is the 34th Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer in the United States Navy and is named after Vice Adm. John D. Bulkeley (1911-1996), who was a World War II Medal of Honor recipient. This ship is the 34th destroyer of its class and was the 15th ship of this class to be built at Ingalls Shipbuilding in Pascagoula, Mississippi, and construction began on 10 May 1999.
The destroyer is homeported in Rota, Spain, and assigned as a U.S. Navy Forward Deployed Naval Forces-Europe (FDNF-E) destroyer. FDNF-E ships have the flexibility to operate throughout the waters of Europe and Africa, from the Cape of Good Hope to the Arctic Circle, demonstrating their mastery of the maritime domain.
We were excited when they contacted us to build a unique custom challenge coin for the USS Bulkely’s Deckplate Leaders. Deckplate leaders are visible figureheads who set the tone, lead by example, know the mission, know their Sailors, and develop them beyond their own expectations as a team and as individuals.
They wanted something unorthodox for the coin. The basic shape of the coin was a torch with flaming fire, with some symbols and inscriptions engaged on it. The concept design was finalized by our graphic designers before it ran through our computerized machine and finished with high-quality paints and coating.
