USS San Juan Challenge Coin

USS San Juan (SSN 751) is a Los Angeles-class fast-attack submarine. The Los Angeles class contains more nuclear submarines than any other class in the world. The class was preceded by the Sturgeon class and followed by the Seawolf.

During its deployment to the U.S. European Command area of responsibility, San Juan steamed nearly 37,600 nautical miles and made port calls to Cypress and Rota, Spain. Commissioned in 1988, San Juan departed Naval Submarine Base New London in Groton, Connecticut, for the last time after 35 years of naval service to begin the decommissioning process.

This is one humble yet elegant custom challenge coin that we fabricated for the USS San Juan. They wanted a navy classic challenge coin with a rope pattern on the rims of the coin, and engraved reliefs on both sides of it. One side has a Panther illustration etched with some background pattern, and on the other side, they requested a US Navy emblem to be applied.

You can see different treatments of machining done to this custom coin. The surface with the panther illustration was etched and the outlines were left at their original height to form a 2D image. On the other side, the relief was engraved with angles so it formed a 3D sculpture.

USS Nimitz 2017 Coin

USS Nimitz 2017 Coin

USS Nimitz 2017 Coin

USS Nimitz (CVN-68) is an aircraft carrier of the United States Navy, one of the largest warships in the world. She was laid down, launched, and commissioned as CVAN 68 but was later re-designated CVN 68 (nuclear-powered multi-mission aircraft carrier) on June 30, 1975, as part of the fleet realignment.

In 2017, Three U.S. carrier strike groups were operating in the U.S. 7th Fleet, after the strike group previously tasked with conducting air strikes against ISIS targets in Syria and Iraq left the Persian Gulf en route to the Western Pacific, according to a statement from the Navy. The USS Nimitz and its escorts left the U.S. 5th Fleet on Wednesday and were homeward bound for Naval Station Bremerton, Wash. The carrier left for its deployment on June 1st, and the strike group began anti-ISIS operations on August 1st.

We were entrusted with the task of manufacturing a custom commemorative coin for the 2017 event. They wanted something spectacular and out-of-the-box. As opposed to a common coin shape, this one is made out of a polygonal shape with a lot of etched graphics and inscriptions.

The base form of the polygonal shape is several stars adjacent to each other to create an enclosing shape which is used to put other graphic elements such as logos and insignias. You can see in the photos that precise cuttings and carvings were done to construct this exceptional coin.

USS Miguel Keith Coin

USS Miguel Keith Coin

USS Miguel Keith Coin

USS Miguel Keith (ESB-5) was originally a non-commissioned ship, with a USNS prefix but, like her sister ships, she was commissioned by the Navy, in order to provide combatant commanders greater operational flexibility in utilizing the ESBs in accordance with the laws of armed conflict. She is a Lewis B. Puller-class expeditionary mobile base, one of three such ships in service with the United States Navy as of late 2021.

This challenge coin was fabricated for the USS Miguel Keith’s Chief Petty Officer’s Mess. The CPO Mess is directly aft of the Bosun’s Locker and the Forward Enlisted Head. This was the lounge for the fifteen or so Chiefs on board. While smaller than the Enlisted Mess, it is slightly more comfortable.

They requested a one-of-a-kind extraordinary challenge coin with a lot of details and elements. On her maiden deployment to the US 7th Fleet based in Japan, the ship left Hawaii and then anchored off the Japanese coast near Nagasaki, Japan, at the US Naval base at Sasebo. They want to commemorate this event by having a Japanese gate or “Torii” to be engraved on one side of the coin.

This custom challenge coin also has many detailed reliefs and graphic elements, even small ones that need precise designing and machining. We’re happy that the result is one amazing and very artistic challenge coin.

USS Iowa Belt Buckle

USS Iowa Belt Buckle

USS Iowa Belt Buckle

USS Iowa (BB-61) is a retired battleship, the lead ship of a class of 45,000-ton battleships, which was built at the New York Navy Yard, Brooklyn, New York. Commissioned in February 1943, From then until the end of 1944, she was intently involved in assaults against Japanese facilities and campaigns to capture the Marianas, the Palaus, and Leyte, including participation in the Battles of the Philippine Sea and Leyte Gulf.

USS Iowa is so famous because it was outfitted in WWII to be the flagship that carried President Franklin Roosevelt across the Atlantic in 1943 for meetings with British Prime Minister Winston Churchill and Soviet Premier Joseph Stalin, hence the nickname “the Battleship of Presidents”.

We had an opportunity to manufacture a custom belt buckle to honor the legendary battleship. It has the shape of Iowa state, with the state’s flag graphic elements, including the state of Iowa’s motto: “Our liberties we prize and our rights we will maintain.” engraved on the face of the buckle.

Building a custom belt buckle would take several steps, involving the digital design process, manufacturing and constructing using our computerized machinery, and finishing the product with paints and coatings. Every step is checked before going into the next one to make sure the quality of the final pieces is excellent.

USS Duarte Challenge Coin

USS Duarte Challenge Coin

USS Duarte Challenge Coin

Methods of training U.S. Navy supply officers have varied greatly over the years. The US Navy Supply Corps School (NSCS) is currently located in Newport, Rhode Island, a state rich in naval heritage, and has provided a permanent institution created for the sole purpose of providing students with the “personal and professional foundation for success.”

In 1971, an Instructor at the Navy Supply Corps School in Athens, GA, was entrusted with creating crew members of the fictitious destroyer, USS DUARTE (DD901) for case studies analysis throughout the Basic Qualification Course. Today, the attached photos of the DUARTE crew and all four supply divisions (Stock control, Foodservice, Retail Operations, and Disbursing) adorn the passageway walls of NSCSl to continue the student learning experience.

The NCS entrusted us with crafting a custom challenge coin for the 3rd Battalion, Echo and Foxtrot. The design concept was simple and straightforward: A very Navy-looking classic challenge coin, colored in gold and blue. They requested to have one of the coin’s sides to have a relief of the mythical USS Duarte.

The base material for the coin went through our computerized machinery that has taken a digitally designed layout drawn by our graphic designers. Once our equipment and tools did their magic, the coin was finished with layers of coating to make sure that it would stay for a long time.
