Navy Challenge Coin

This is a Navy custom challenge coin ordered by the Weapons Department of the USS Nimitz. USS Nimitz (CVN-68) is a supercarrier of the United States Navy, and the lead ship of her class. One of the largest warships in the world, she is commissioned as CVN-68, “aircraft carrier, multi-mission, nuclear-powered”. The Nimitz-class carriers have a lifespan of approximately 50 years, in December 2020, it was announced that Nimitz would be decommissioned and enter the Ship-Submarine Recycling Program by 2025.

The USS Nimitz Weapons Department wanted a noteworthy coin that is look different from usual challenge coin, something simple in the overall impression, but have modern elements and using stylish and contemporary colors. We decided to use glossy black and magenta as the base colors of the coin. On the surface of both side, we arranged their logos and insignias to be placed proportionally balanced, and making sure that the attributes and small details are clearly shown.

On the picture you can see that it’s one-of-a-kind Navy challenge coin. Something simple packed with enough details to show its avant-garde look. The contrast of the darkness of the black background on one side and the brightness of the magenta, creates a really delightful balance to this pretty challenge coin.

VMA Navy Challenge Coin

Marine All-Weather Fighter Attack Squadron 533 (VMFA(AW)-533) is a United States Marine squadron. also known as the “Hawks”. The squadron is based at Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort, South Carolina. They began its history on 1 October, 1943. On this date, Marine Night Fighter Squadron 533 (VMF(N)-533) was commissioned at MCAS Cherry Point, North Carolina. Their mission is to conduct joint / combined aviation operations in order to support a Marine Air Ground Task Force commander’s Command and Control, intelligence, fires, maneuver, and force protection warfighting functions.

They requested a custom challenge coin to us, and so we want to design a one-of-a-kind coin that would represent the squadron in its entirety. On one side of the coin, we put their insignia and a bit of lettering. And on the other side, they wanted to have the Grumman A6 Intruder, one of their attack aircrafts, to be sculpted nicely there.

What you get as a result is a very straightforward and unique looking challenge coin. On one side it look like a simple regular coin, with the insignia of the squadron nicely embossed and painted. And the other side the Intruder aircraft is crafted precisely it looks like it’s going to fly right out of the coin!

“The Statue of Liberty Enlightening the World” was a gift of friendship from the people of France to the United States and is recognized as a universal symbol of freedom and democracy. The Statue of Liberty was dedicated on October 28, 1886. It was designated as a National Monument in 1924. Employees of the National Park Service have been caring for the colossal copper statue since 1933.

This custom challenge coin was commissioned to us by the Army National Guard. They wanted a unique challenge coin and requested it be shaped like the statue itself. And they also asked us to use camouflage color so it emanate Army vibes. So we have an image of the Statue of Liberty on one side with green camouflage colors, and on the other, we put the the engraving of the rank insignias and US Army Core Values letterings. For the base material, we use brushed brass to give the coin a vintage but glamorous feel.

The outline shape of the statue was cut marvelously, and the camo colors goes well together with the brushed brass base material. The Red paint for the torch convey a really nice accent. The engraved letterings and insignias are also flawlessly executed, each of them can be seen and read clearly.

While the basic concept for the design is quite simple and clear, the graphic and design elements in their insignias are pretty sophisticated, with a lot of small lines and curves.

And they also want a colorful challenge coin, which means that most of the surface of the coin will be painted, including the areas within the embossed lines. The choice of the colors and the height of the sculpted outlines will determine the success of manufacturing the coin. Each ornament must not overwhelming each other to create a synergy in the design.

The result is a brilliant and enchanting challenge coin. You can see for yourself in the pictures that everything is fabricated perfectly. The colors are painted exactly where they should be, and all the outlines and graphics are engraved adequately.

ACCRON ONE TWO ZERO or Airborne Command & Control Squadron (VAW) 120, also called the ‘Greyhawks’, is a United States Navy Fleet Replacement Squadron responsible for training crews on the E-2 Hawkeye and the C-2 Greyhound. Its mission is to fly and train Naval Aviators, Naval Flight Officers, and Naval Aircrewmen to safely and effectively operate E-2 and C-2 aircraft, preparing them to join the fleet.

They wanted us to design and produce a custom challenge coin which will be awarded by their Commanding Officer. They wanted something classy, elegant but minimalistic in design. And they also want this challenge coin to function as bottle opener. While designing something simple could sound like an effortless work, it’s the fine points that needed more attention than usual. Especially with the bottle opener opening in the middle of the coin, the options to arrange the graphics and the texts is limited. What we needed to do is to make sure that every details in the engraved graphics and text are well executed because the dimensions could not be large enough.

We are very satisfied with the result. The minimalistic look of Black & Gold colors radiates classic and elegant vibe, and the bottle opener blends in perfectly with the entire layout of the design.
