Submarine Development Squadron 5 Coin

Submarine Development Squadron 5 or DEVRON FIVE, is a unique squadron. It brings with it an entirely different portfolio than any other squadron in the Submarine Force. They are headquartered at the Naval Base Kitsap – Bangor, Silverdale, Washington. Up until World War II and for a little after, submarine squadrons could have several Submarine Divisions (SubDivs), often pairs of submarines.

DEVRON 5 conducts cooperative programs with civilian scientific and academic institutions in pursuit of national science objectives and is responsible within the Navy’s submarine force for tactical development, including unmanned undersea vehicles and naval special warfare.

They contacted us at Embleholics when they wanted to build a custom challenge coin for their ceremonial event. The design that they gave us was not like a common challenge coin. It was shaped like a DEVRON FIVE logo, a badge with the trident in the middle of it.

Building a uniquely shaped coin like this is not a problem for us since we have cutting-edge technology, including a digital design system and computerized machinery. Please check out the photos to the right and see for yourself the excellent details on the insignias and the image of the three wolves. They were engraved flawlessly even though the details were very small.

SSBN 743 Challenge Coin

SSBN 743 Challenge Coin

USS Lousiana (SSBN 743) is the 18th and last submarine of the Ohio class of ballistic missile submarines (SSBNs), and the fourth U.S. Navy ship to bear the name. She carries Trident ballistic missiles and has been in commission since 1997. The keel of Louisiana was laid on Oct. 23, 1992, and she was christened on July 27.

Louisiana’s crest recalls the traditions of the people of the state of Louisiana and the three previous U.S. Navy ships to bear the name Louisiana. The symbolism of the crest reminds both crews of their bond to the people and history of Louisiana, as well as the tradition of the naval veterans who have served aboard ships of the same name.

We had the opportunity to honor the USS Louisiana by crafting a custom challenge coin ordered by the U.S. Navy. They wanted a coin with a more modern vibe, without leaving the common U.S. Navy symbols such as the blue color and the trident.

We used a brass-colored metal as the base component for the coin. On the front side, we sculpted a relief of the submarine with some other graphic elements around it. The final touch for the coin is the shadow effect on the coin’s main color to give depth to the layout, and some painted colors on the relief.

Springfield Police K9 Coin

Springfield Police K9 Coin

In 1976 Sergeant Alan Carlson observed the dogs’ work and became interested in the K-9 program. He believed that dogs were useful tools for law enforcement and he initiated a study and proposal for the Springfield Police Department. In 1981, after continuous years of submitting the proposal, a new City Manager allowed the City Council to review the report. Thus, the Springfield Police K9 Unit was formed.

The Springfield K-9 Trainer tests each dog at the vendor’s kennel prior to acceptance and training to establish if the dog possesses the necessary instincts and drives to complete a police service dog training course and meet the high standards of the Springfield Police Department.

They asked us to build them a custom challenge coin and we crafted one cool and special custom coin for them. The design is minimalistic and unsophisticated, with the use of minimal patterns and elements.

We engraved a picture of a K9 unit on the front side of the coin, and on the back, we sculpted their emblems and insignias. The color used on this coin was mostly black, used for rendering the shadows on the image and for the backgrounds, with some small coloring on the rims and the insignias.

Taps Song Challenge Coin

Taps Song Challenge Coin

Taps Song Challenge Coin

The use of “Taps” is unique to the United States military, as the call is sounded at funerals, wreath-laying ceremonies, and memorial services. “Taps” originally began as a signal to extinguish lights. Up until the Civil War, the infantry call for “Extinguish Lights” was the one set down in the Infantry manuals which had been borrowed from the French.

Taps song is played every day in Veterans’ cemeteries around the world. Those clear, sad tones conjure up memories of loved ones lost, instill hope, and bring comfort and peace to the families and communities of those who have served with honor. In 2012, the U.S. Congress recognized “Taps” as the “National Song of Remembrance.”

This custom challenge coin was crafted to honor a U.S. Army Specialist. We were requested to make a beautiful and memorable challenge coin, with a timeless design. The main element that we used for the relief of the coin was an image of a soldier blowing a bugle.

The ‘soldier with a bugle’ relief was made in digital design before our cutting-edge machinery sculpted it on the base material made from high-quality metal. The reliefs on both sides were painted with brass-colored coats with black backgrounds, encircled with some inscriptions taken from the lyrics of the Taps song.

Crew Dragon Demo-2 Coin

Crew Dragon Demo-2 Coin

Crew Dragon Demo-2 Coin

Crew Dragon Demo-2, officially named Crew Demo-2, SpaceX Demo-2, or Demonstration Mission-2, was the first crewed test flight of the Crew Dragon spacecraft. After the Space Shuttle program was brought to an end in 2011, NASA no longer had a spacecraft system capable of sending humans to space, and The Demo-2 mission was expected to be SpaceX’s last major test before NASA certified it for regular crewed spaceflights.

The Demo-2 mission was the first launch with astronauts of the SpaceX Crew Dragon spacecraft and Falcon 9 rocket to the International Space Station as part of the agency’s Commercial Crew Program. The test flight served as an end-to-end demonstration of SpaceX’s crew transportation system.

We were contacted by SpaceX to build a custom challenge coin for that special event. You’d expect a modern and contemporary design being used on a coin for a rocket tech company like Space X. The concept design was full of colors and graphic design with the spacecraft launch theme.

The coin has an image of an astronot on one side, and the logo of the Demo-2 on the other. Both of them has thin lines as outlines, so we had to make sure that the digital design that we ran through our computerized machinery could read it and construct them well. You can see that the result was a superb challenge coin.
