48th Infantry Regiment Challenge Coin

The 48th Infantry Regiment is an infantry regiment in the United States Army which is founded in 1917. The 1st and 2nd Battalions, 48th Infantry, were mechanized infantry units assigned to the 3rd Armored Division (United States) (3AD) in West Germany during the Cold War. The battalions had overlapping assignments in the 3AD within the time frame 1957 to 1983. On June 16, 2017, the 48th Infantry’s 2nd Battalion was reactivated in a ceremony at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri.

48th Infantry veterans are very pleased to know the Dragoons are once again proudly serving our nation at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, training about 5000 soldiers per year, primarily for the Combat Service Support branches. They have received a number of historical artifacts of the regiment from World War One to modern times. Additional items I am sure would be welcome.

They asked us to produce their custom challenge coin and wanted it to be also functional as a bottle opener. They wanted something bold and straightforward, with no room for unnecessary ornaments or decoration.

The base material was shaped like a dog tag, with the area in the middle cut out for the bottle opener to function. The base color is gloss black, with the edges and the letterings finished in gold. The only colors applied are just the ones on their Dragoons insignia.

The 509th Mission Support Group is comprised of six squadrons with more than 1,800 Air Force and contract personnel in the Air Force’s only B-2 wing. The group provides support for emergency operations, readiness, security, construction, communications, fire protection, human resources, food services, fuels, transportation, supply and family support.

The 509th Civil Engineer Squadron maintains and operates a 5,566-acre base complex. CE provides engineering, alterations and new construction, fire protection, disaster response and explosive ordnance disposal services. Members of this squadron deploy worldwide in support of contingency operations and nuclear deterrence missions.

They wanted a custom challenge coin which also can be use as bottle opener, without being noticed as a bottle opener. So the basic design of this coin would be like a normal challenge coin, but we hollow out the middle of the coin with a half-circle shape. And then we designed constructed the tooth of the bottle opener that it won’t stick out too much and reveal its function. Once we got the right shape laid out, it’s only about putting other elements and ornaments such as the insignias and the inscriptions.

As you can see in the photos, we think we did quite well with the design. If you don’t look too close, it doesn’t look like a bottle opener. Even when you finally realize that it is, it still emanates the elegance of a beautiful challenge coin.

Air Force 3E0X2 Challenge Coin

Air Force 3E0X2 Challenge Coin

Air Force 3E0X2 Challenge Coin

Air Force Electrical Power Production (3E0X2) is one of the most important responsibilities within the USAF. The Air Force is very reliant on electricity which makes the specialty code extremely important to daily operations. Air Force 3E0X2 Specialists install, operate, maintain, and repair electrical power generating and control systems.

The United States Air Force classifies its military jobs as specialty codes (AFSC). The classification is a little different from the U.S. Army and Marine Corps which defines jobs as Military Occupational Specialities (MOS). Every AFSC in the Air Force has qualifications and training requirements.

They wanted a custom challenge coin that represents the spirit and skill of 3E0X2. The basic shape of the coin is designed to look like a gear, with their insignias to be carved on both sides. While it’s no ordinary looking challenge coin, if you look again closely, you can see that a couple of the gear teeth are actually can be used as a bottle cap opener!

The end result is a custom coin that look like it came straight out of an apocalyptic video game or movie. All the design elements are crafted flawlessly, without unnecessary decoration or ornament. And as this challenge coin can be also use as the bottle opener, it really epitomizes the specialists’ spirit.

Operation Freedom Army Challenge Coin

Operation Freedom Army Challenge Coin

Operation Freedom Army Challenge Coin

Operation Freedom’s Sentinel (OFS) was the official name used by the U.S. government for the mission succeeding Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) in continuation of the War in Afghanistan as part of the larger Global War on Terrorism. After thirteen years of Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S. military and NATO allies shifted focus from major military operations to a smaller role of NATO-led training and assistance. Operation Freedom Sentinel was expected to formally end on August 31, 2021, but concluded with the final withdrawal of US forces from Afghanistan on August 30.

The OFS Signal Command division requested an exclusive but functional custom challenge coin. And we agreed to go design one that can also be used as a bottle opener. We wanted to make a pretty simple shape for the coin, but not too simple that it will become so ordinary, so we decided to combine a square shape with a circle, and then bevel the edges to make the outline looks smoother.

The result is a one-off challenge coin that looks and feels like a dog tag, and you can bring anywhere and use it as a practical bottle opener. If you look closely, you can see that the embossed insignias and lettering are perfectly manufactured that you can see each of them clearly. We are really happy to see that a functional item could look this beautiful.

Navy Anchor Command Challenge Coin

USS Little Rock (LCS-9) is a Freedom-class littoral combat ship (LCS) of the United States Navy. She is the second ship named after Little Rock, the capital city of Arkansas. Little Rock is comprised of two crews, Gold “Scorpions” and Blue “Warhawgs”. The Gold Scorpions are the one asked us to design and manufacture this astonishing piece of custom Navy Anchor challenge coin.

While most of the time people ask us to make a relatively common looking challenge coin to keep it simple or want to stay classy, this is not the case with the Little Rock’s Scorpions coin. They want something that is fun and extraordinary. They choose the Navy’s anchor as the base shape of the coin. They also requested to have a diamond plate background on one side of the coin, and a picture of an infamous video game character called ‘Scorpion’ on the other side. And they also want the coin to function as a bottle opener. While it’s not an easy work, we were actually having fun designing this cool coin!

The finished coin pictures could describe better than hundred words. The golden anchor, the sculpted chains, the engraved logos and images, are all imprinted and painted impeccably that all of them scream in a perfect harmony.
