USS San Juan Challenge Coin
USS San Juan (SSN 751) is a Los Angeles-class fast-attack submarine. The Los Angeles class contains more nuclear submarines than any other class in the world. The class was preceded by the Sturgeon class and followed by the Seawolf.
During its deployment to the U.S. European Command area of responsibility, San Juan steamed nearly 37,600 nautical miles and made port calls to Cypress and Rota, Spain. Commissioned in 1988, San Juan departed Naval Submarine Base New London in Groton, Connecticut, for the last time after 35 years of naval service to begin the decommissioning process.
This is one humble yet elegant custom challenge coin that we fabricated for the USS San Juan. They wanted a navy classic challenge coin with a rope pattern on the rims of the coin, and engraved reliefs on both sides of it. One side has a Panther illustration etched with some background pattern, and on the other side, they requested a US Navy emblem to be applied.
You can see different treatments of machining done to this custom coin. The surface with the panther illustration was etched and the outlines were left at their original height to form a 2D image. On the other side, the relief was engraved with angles so it formed a 3D sculpture.
