USS Nimitz 2017 Coin
USS Nimitz (CVN-68) is an aircraft carrier of the United States Navy, one of the largest warships in the world. She was laid down, launched, and commissioned as CVAN 68 but was later re-designated CVN 68 (nuclear-powered multi-mission aircraft carrier) on June 30, 1975, as part of the fleet realignment.
In 2017, Three U.S. carrier strike groups were operating in the U.S. 7th Fleet, after the strike group previously tasked with conducting air strikes against ISIS targets in Syria and Iraq left the Persian Gulf en route to the Western Pacific, according to a statement from the Navy. The USS Nimitz and its escorts left the U.S. 5th Fleet on Wednesday and were homeward bound for Naval Station Bremerton, Wash. The carrier left for its deployment on June 1st, and the strike group began anti-ISIS operations on August 1st.
We were entrusted with the task of manufacturing a custom commemorative coin for the 2017 event. They wanted something spectacular and out-of-the-box. As opposed to a common coin shape, this one is made out of a polygonal shape with a lot of etched graphics and inscriptions.
The base form of the polygonal shape is several stars adjacent to each other to create an enclosing shape which is used to put other graphic elements such as logos and insignias. You can see in the photos that precise cuttings and carvings were done to construct this exceptional coin.
