US Navy Mustang Coin
In the Navy, a Mustang can refer to any former enlisted personnel serving as commissioned, limited duty, and/or warrant officers. The Navy Mustang Association (NMA) is the only professional and social organization instituted for Naval officers who served proudly for three or more years in the enlisted ranks.
There are many different routes Sailors can take to become a Mustang, and all of the programs are geared toward different career paths. Unlike other nations, a US Mustang Officer is not a temporary or brevet promotion but rather an earned Commission from the President of the United States of America afforded all the same pay, with additional for the enlisted time, command responsibilities, and expectations as other commissioned officers in the United States.
The Navy Mustang reached us at Embleholics to produce their custom challenge coin. They wanted a coin with a modern vibe, with relatively simple graphics and inscriptions. They asked us to engrave small engravings of their insignias and emblems, and have their motto “sursum ab ordine” which means “up from the ranks”, to be inscribed on the front side of the coin.
There are many techniques to apply a graphic image or lettering onto a coin’s surface. They could be engraved or carved, and also could be printed with special material so they will have 3D effects. The numbers on the radar image on this coin is an example of that.
