Aviation Ordnance Challenge Coin

In terms of military, Aviation Ordnance is any expendable weaponry (e.g. bombs, missiles, rockets, and gun ammunition) used by military aircraft. Aviation Ordnancemen (AO) operate and handle aviation ordnance equipment and they are responsible for the maintenance of guns, bombs, torpedoes, rockets, and missiles.

AOs perform their duties at sea on flight decks and ashore in hangars, on flight lines at air stations, or in shops under various environmental conditions. They work closely with others, do mostly physical work, and require little supervision. Aviation Ordnance Limited Duty Officers serve as officer technical managers in the field of operations and maintenance of aviation ordnance and aircraft armament.

We had an order from the U.S. Navy’s Ordnance University to produce custom challenge coins for their Aviation Ordnance Managers. They wanted a coin design that could represent the spirit of the U.S. Navy’s Aviation Ordnancemen, by having their insignia and the images of the aircraft & weapons put on both sides of the coin.

We placed their logo, a winged skull with a fiery top, on the front side of the coin, and had it embossed. On top of the logo, we engraved some ballistic missiles which represent the weapons handled by the AOs. On the back of the coin, we put some reliefs of the aircraft and a couple of U.S. Navy insignias.

Operations Specialist Challenge Coin

Operations Specialist Challenge Coin

Operations Specialist Challenge Coin

Operations Specialist or OS, is a United States Navy and United States Coast Guard occupational rating. An OS functions as a plotter, radio-telephone, and Command and Control sound-powered telephone talker, and maintains Combat Information Center (CIC) displays of strategic and tactical information.

Using a wide variety of assets available to them, Operations Specialists are responsible for the organized collection, processing, display, competent evaluation and rapid dissemination of pertinent tactical combat information to command and control stations, upon which sound tactical decisions may be made.

A USS Mesa Verde personnel contacted us and requested us to make them a custom challenge coin, they wanted a navy challenge coin that would look modern and have a technological vibe to it, since Operations Specialists deal with leading-edge pieces of equipment.

We used a round-shaped metal for the coin’s base material. To make it more contemporary-looking, we left the edge and rim of the coin smooth without any patterns. On the front side, we embossed the emblem of Mesa Verda and the logotype of the Operations Specialist, colored simply just as shadows to give the overall design depth, and left the remaining space with only sandy texture, without any decorations or graphics.

On the back side of the coin, we engraved an image of an OS console, encircled with their inscribed motto, and had the background colored with glossy black paint.

Old Salt’s Chiefs Mess Coin

Old Salt’s Chiefs Mess Coin

Old Salt’s Chiefs Mess Coin

According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, an ‘Old Salt’ means ‘Someone who has sailed for many years’ or ‘An experienced sailor who has been at sea so long he is “salty” from the ocean’. In the United States Navy, ‘Old Salt’ is a nickname given to the USS Nimitz (CVN-68), being one of the USA’s famous ships with a long naval history.

Old Salt’s Chiefs Mess is the term used for the network of chiefs within a command as well as the chiefs in the USS Nimitz. Often referred to as, “the Mess,” it allows chiefs to share knowledge and information with each other, develop as leaders, and act as a resource to their Sailors.

We were given the chance to manufacture a beautiful custom challenge coin for the Old Salt’s Chiefs Mess. They wanted a shiny, good-looking challenge coin, with a little bit of uniqueness. The distinction that makes the coin unique is we cut a small portion of the coin and shaped it like a wave.

On the front side of the coin, we engraved a relief of a U.S. Navy Chief covered in gold color, with an image of ocean waves in the background. On the back side, we sculpted an image of the USS Nimitz in silver, encircled by 5 stars and with a big ‘N’ in the foreground. The edge and the rim of the coin, along with the inscriptions are painted with gold finish.

Fort Bragg Challenge Coin

Fort Bragg Challenge Coin

Fort Bragg Challenge Coin

Fort Liberty, formerly Fort Bragg, is a military installation of the United States Army in North Carolina, and is one of the largest military installations in the world by population, with over 52,000 military personnel. Fort Bragg was originally established as Camp Bragg, named after Confederate General Braxton Bragg, as an artillery training site in 1918.

Fort Liberty is the home of the Airborne. For more than half a century, Fort Liberty has had a proud heritage as the Home of the Nation’s finest fighting forces. From the 1950s to the 2000s Fort Bragg has participated in a series of deployments and philanthropic missions.

This coin we crafted is for the Airborne’s Office of Special Warfare (OSW) which is stationed in Fort Liberty. They ordered a coin with a minimalistic design, but still eye-catching due to the use of the colors and graphics on both sides of the coin.

The final design for this unsophisticated challenge coin is one side has a green background with the Airborne’s OSW insignia embossed, and the other side has a black background with the image of a light going through a prism, symbolizing the training that the Airborne personnel have to go through to make them better.

NTAG Houston Officer Coin

Navy Recruiting Command currently maintains 26 Navy Talent Acquisition Groups (NTAG), formerly known as Navy Recruiting Districts (NRD), strategically located throughout the United States. Navy Recruiting is responsible for recruiting young men and women into the Active Duty and Naval Reserve enlisted forces. We also recruit for Officer Candidate School, and Officer Indoctrination School and process applications for Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps.

Recruiting is a unique duty assignment, one where your contributions directly affect our Navy’s ability to man the Fleet and be fully mission-ready every day. It requires strong, motivated men and women who embrace unique challenges and believe in the opportunity our Navy has to offer other deserving young adults.

The NTAG Houston requested a custom challenge coin to be manufactured for them. The design that they proposed to us was a classic U.S. Navy challenge coin, but it’s a bit exceptional because they wanted it to be shaped like a ship’s helm. Other than that it’s quite similar to a common USN coin design, with relief sculptures on both sides of the coin.

We ran the design through our 2D graphic designer to be applied for sampling and approval. After the computerized design was approved, we took it to our state-of-the-art machinery, and for the final touch, we applied the paint and protective coat to ensure the coin’s lastingness.
