Vessey Veterans Resource Center Coin

University of Maryland Global Campus’ Veterans Resource Center is a comprehensive resource that provides timely information essential to making informed decisions that provides information to military-connected UMGC students while they transition to civilian life. They not only have a physical veterans’ lounge, but also a virtual student union.

The Vessey VRC is named in honor of a legendary UMGC alumnus and one of the most brilliant and inspiring military figures of our time, General John W. Vessey, Jr. Located on UMGC’s Largo, Maryland campus, the resource center, and Hildebrand Lounge are open Monday through Thursday. It provides local, state, and federal resources from the Department of Veterans Affairs and third-party organizations.

We designed and fabricated this custom challenge coin for The Vessey VRC. The coin has a simple concept, just showing the logo of the University of Maryland on one side, and an etching of a compass on the other. Other than that there were only some letterings around the graphics to be embossed.

The material chosen for the coin was a copper-colored metal, and the finish for the end-product was some colors for the University of Maryland’s logo, and some dark coating to give the overall design a nice tone.

USS Nimitz Challenge Coin

USS Nimitz Challenge Coin

USS Nimitz Challenge Coin

USS Nimitz (CVN 68) is the lead ship of the U.S. Navy’s Nimitz-class nuclear-powered aircraft carriers and is named in honor of Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz. With the inactivation of the USS Enterprise in 2012 and decommissioning in 2017, Nimitz is now the oldest U.S. aircraft carrier in service, the oldest serving aircraft carrier, and the mothership of the Navy fleet in the world. The Nimitz-class carriers have a lifespan of approximately 50 years.

Estimates on decommissioning for Nimitz herself were updated in April 2022, with the Navy Press Corps indicating that USS Nimitz is planned to be removed from the battle force in the fiscal year 2025, when the ship’s Terminal Off-load Program begins, with inactivation scheduled to begin in 2027. Every job in the civilian world likely exists on the Nimitz. Doctors, mechanics, and ministers are a few occupations seen aboard.

This beautiful and shiny custom challenge coin was produced for the Mustang Association mess deck take-over in the galley of the aircraft carrier USS Nimitz. It was also designed to be a unique challenge coin, with the ship’s wheel a the base shape, combined with the shape of a mustang.

The whole coin was colored in shiny gold, and a part of the mustang was painted in the US Flag colors, while the insignias on the back were colored in silver.

USS Henry M Jackson Coin

USS Henry M Jackson Coin

USS Henry M Jackson Coin

USS Henry M. Jackson (SSBN 730) is the fifth submarine of the Ohio class of ballistic missile submarines (SSBNs), Henry M. Jackson originally was to have been called Rhode Island, but was named in honor of the late U.S. Sen. Henry M. Jackson (1912-1983). As a result, it is the only Ohio-class submarine not named after a state.

USS Henry M. Jackson was launched on 15 October 1983, sponsored by Senator Jackson’s daughter, Ms. Anna Marie Jackson, and commissioned on 6 October 1984, with Captain R. Tindal in command of the Blue Crew and Captain M. A. Farmer in command of the Gold Crew.

This is also one of the unique and uncommon custom challenge coins that we have ever produced. The design is basically a normal challenge coin, but with an octopus, which in the US Navy usually symbolizes submarines, creeping over it. We had to make sure that this concept was executed well by making the octopus look alive.

The octopus was sculpted nicely, holding Pollux and Castor, the fishes on the US Navy logo. It was colored in gold, so it will be shown on the silver-colored coin. And on the back side, we put an engraving of a compass, with the inscription of “HMJ” and “730” around it.

USN Chief’s Mess Coin

USN Chief’s Mess Coin

USN Chief’s Mess Coin

Aboard ships, in squadrons, and in all commands the Chiefs are organized into a “Mess”, or the place where they eat, lounge, and have meetings. The Chief’s Mess holds great symbolic meaning for everyone in the United States Navy from the newest recruit to the Chief of Naval Operations (CNO).

The term ‘Mess’ is also used to indicate the groups of military personnel who belong to separate messes, such as the officers’ mess, the chief petty officer mess, and the enlisted mess. In some civilian societies, this military usage has been extended to the eating arrangements of other disciplined services such as firefighting and police forces.

The US Navy wanted to build another custom challenge coin to honor the Chief’s Mess. They requested something unordinary, with a design of an octopus holding a trident, and crawling over a bottle with a submarine in it. Sounds phenomenal but we believed we can execute it nonetheless.

You can check out the result in the pictures, that this is truly an extraordinary challenge coin. The organic shape of the coin formed by the sculpture of the octopus, combined with the rectangle shape of the bottle, and completed with the fine details of the small insignias and the submarine.

COMPSRON Two Challenge Coin

COMPSRON Two Challenge Coin

COMPSRON Two Challenge Coin

Maritime Pre-positioning Ship Squadron (MPSRON) TWO is a US Navy squadron that has a mission to transport vital equipment and supplies to a designated area of operations in support of combatant commanders worldwide.

MPSRON Two is an afloat staff of 25 military personnel and three civilians under the command of a U.S. Navy captain. The staff is embarked on one of the squadron’s five Maritime Prepositioning Ships. Prepositioning ships provide quick and efficient movement of military gear between operating areas without reliance on other nations’ transportation networks. These ships give U.S. regional combatant commanders the assurance that they will have what they need to quickly respond in a crisis – anywhere, anytime.

They commissioned us to design and build the custom challenge coin that would be rewarded to the Commander of MPSRON 2, also called COMPSRON TWO. They wanted something elegant but also different from ordinary challenge coins. While maintaining the classic look of a normal challenge coin, they asked us to have the inner part of the coin be built separately and can be rotated so it’ll be something extraordinary.

As you can see in the photos, we successfully produced and delivered the challenge coin that they requested. It’s one extraordinaire and elegant custom challenge coin.
