Navy Reserve Surge Maintenance (SURGEMAIN) delivers ship maintenance manning whenever and wherever needed. SurgeMain Sailors provide valuable technical overhead support, using skills from their civilian experience to perform critical machinery maintenance, return needed equipment to service, and fill key supervisory roles within the shipyard.

Established in 2005, SurgeMain has 2,440 Reserve Sailors across 75 units. Created to augment the Navy’s organic civilian shipyard workforce in times of need, these Sailors have technical and trade backgrounds that allow them to have an immediate impact. The Navy activates SurgeMain during a critical time of need, these Sailors rise to the challenge to help the shipyards deliver combat-ready ships back to the Fleet.

They requested a custom challenge coin with a unique and distinguishable shape. As opposed to the common round-shaped coin, this one’s shape is taken from a combination of a gear and crossed wrenches. Submarine Readiness Squadron Buckle

On July 15, 2021. the U.S. Navy Submarine Force announced the Submarine Readiness Squadrons or SRS, formerly Naval Submarine Support Centers. The name change is in coordinating with the submarine community’s mission to generate combat-ready submarines to meet mission tasking and generation for combatant commanders by supporting operational submarines, new submarine construction, and addressing and maintaining the operational fleet needs during Chief of Naval Operations maintenance availabilities.

Sailors assigned to Submarine Readiness Squadron 31 exchanged their ball caps during a name-change ceremony at Naval Base Kitsap-Bangor on that day. The Submarine Force and supporting organizations constitute the primary undersea arm of the Navy. Submarines and their crews remain the tip of the undersea spear.

We were contacted to have their custom belt buckles designed and manufactured for them. They requested something shiny and colorful, with beautifully detailed relief applied on the surface of the buckle. The illustration that they sent us depicts a trident-wielding octopus, hovering over the ocean with the skyline of Seattle behind it.

Strike Fighter Squadron 102 Buckle

Strike Fighter Squadron 102 (VFA-102) is a United States Navy Strike Fighter squadron based at Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni, Yamaguchi Prefecture, Japan. Their call sign is Diamond, with the tail code NF, with a diamondback rattlesnake as their mascot as shown in their insignia. VFA-102 is attached to Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 5 and flies the F/A-18F Super Hornet.

Established in 1955 as VF-102 at NAS Cecil Field, Florida, the DIAMONDBACKS began initial training in gunnery, bombing, nuclear weapons delivery, and high-altitude intercepts in the F2H-4 Banshee. While the homeport, aircraft, and personnel of the DIAMONDBACKS have continually changed over the years, their mission has not. They will continue to train and are standing ready to bring the full combat power of the Rhino to bear and enhance stability in the Pacific through strength, cooperation, and presence.

They commissioned the production of a custom belt buckle to us and they wanted something bold as a fashion statement and represent the spirit of the squadron. They requested an illustration of the diamondback rattlesnake head embossed on the buckle, with the ‘Diamondbacks’ title inscribed in front of it.

The difference between producing a buckle and a coin is that a belt buckle has a curved surface, but it is not a problem for our computerized equipment. The buckle was coated with gold and red colors with a glossy black background.

Special Investigations Unit Coin

The Winter Haven Police Department incorporates 91 sworn officers and 33 civilians. Their Department is accredited by The Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement (CALEA) and has been state-accredited by the Commission for Florida Law Enforcement Accreditation (CFA) since 2002. The Winter Haven Police Department is devoted to the community through programs such as D.A.R.E., Police Explorers, Neighborhood Watch, and extensive Crime Prevention functions.

The Winter Haven Police Department’s Special Investigations Unit is comprised of narcotics detectives maintaining a close working relationship with the general crime detectives. This unit examines complaints of controlled substance violations, prostitution, and other related crimes. An assortment of tactics are used to combat these issues within the community.

They reached us when they wanted to create their custom challenge coin for this special unit. The design is quite contemporary as they asked us to leave the edge of the coin smooth without a machined pattern. They also would like to have black and blue, the colors of the law enforcer, as the dominant colors. And lastly, they requested their insignia and the image of the unit to be engraved on the sides of the coin.

SpaceX Starlink 10 Coin

Starlink is a satellite internet constellation, that started launching Starlink satellites in 2019, operated by American aerospace company SpaceX, providing coverage to over 60 countries and aims for global mobile phone service after 2023. Starlink’s high-speed, low-latency service is made possible through the world’s largest constellation of highly state-of-the-art satellites operating in a low orbit around the Earth.

Starlink provides satellite-based internet connectivity to underprivileged areas of the planet, as well as reasonably priced service in more urbanized areas. SpaceX also designs, builds, and launches made-to-measure military satellites based on variants of the Starlink satellite bus, with the largest publicly known customer being the Space Development Agency (SDA).

We were asked to build a one-of-a-kind custom commemorative coin for the Starlink 10 Launch event. The design was nothing unordinary, just a common round-shaped coin with graphic elements and inscriptions. They asked us to have the graphics represent the event of the Starlink launch.

We basically designed SpaceX’s Starlink coin in two colors, chrome and blue, with additional colors such as white, red, and green for accents. The chrome coating was used for the base of the coin, over the rim, and the edge of the coin. Some inscription was also applied on the rim, covered in the chrome coat. The blue paint was applied to the embossed graphics on both sides of the coin.
