USS Carl Vinson Coin

USS Carl Vinson (CVN-70) is the United States Navy’s third Nimitz-class supercarrier, famous for launching the first airstrikes in the Global War on Terrorism, after being underway during the September 11th terrorist attacks. USS Carl Vinson was also one of the aircraft carriers where the jets in the movie ‘Top Gun’ are landing and taking off in the sunset.

The third of 10 Nimitz-class aircraft carriers active in the fleet, Vinson was commissioned in Newport News, Va. on March 13, 1982, after over seven years of construction. The keel was laid at Newport News Shipbuilding on 11 October 1975, and on 15 March 1980, the ship was launched. Congressman Carl Vinson became the first person in the history of the United States Navy to witness a ship’s launching in his honor.

This custom challenge coin that we fabricated for CVN-70 is one of the most artistic and exceptional coins we have ever done. It has the shape of a combination of an octopus, an eagle, and the letter V. They requested us to put some inscriptions and insignias on the back side of the coin.

We made the base design digitally and made some mock-ups so our client could see some options before we sent it to our production machine. This coin is one of the examples of how the quality of our work is only limited by your imagination.

USS Alaska Challenge Coin

USS Alaska Challenge Coin

USS Alaska Challenge Coin

USS Alaska (SSBN-732), is a United States Navy Ohio-class ballistic missile submarine that has been operative since 1986. Alaska spent much of 1986 engaged in shakedown training for her two crews and in clearing up the many details that attend a new fleet ballistic missile submarine’s addition to the Fleet. Alaska’s current home port is Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay, Georgia.

The submarine Alaska is part of the Navy’s mission to provide a credible nuclear force, deterring aggression and providing assurance for our allies and partners. USS Alaska has accomplished many firsts throughout her time in service. Most recently Alaska was the first submarine to complete 100 strategic deterrent patrols.

We were given the task of building a custom challenge coin for their commanding officer. The design concept was pretty classic and conventional, with insignia reliefs and inscriptions on both sides of the coin, but what makes this coin a one-of-a-kind is it’s oval-shaped as opposed to round like a comment coin.

The elements applied to the coin were somewhat vintage or traditional. The choice of fonts and graphics were ones taken from the original US Navy and USS Alaska insignia and emblem. The coin was coated in matte gold finish, with glossy paints to color the engraved graphics.

USN Recruiting Command Coin

USN Recruiting Command Coin

USN Recruiting Command Coin

The United States Navy Recruiting Command (NRC or NAVCRUITCOM) aims to recruit both enlisted sailors and prospective commissioned officers for the United States Navy. Navy Recruiting Command remained in Washington, D.C., until July 1999, when the headquarters relocated to its current facilities at Naval Support Activity Mid-South, Millington, Tennessee.

Its vision is to inspire people to join the world’s greatest Navy and reinspire U.S. military veterans to serve as drilling reservists while being known for the highest standards of leadership, integrity, professionalism, competence, and client services that are based upon a culture of purpose and respect.

We at Embleholics had the opportunity to build them one of the most beautiful and sophisticated custom challenge coins that we’ve ever produced. The overall design was similar to the common coin or challenge coin that you see every day, but you will realize how multifaceted the coin’s craftmanship and details are once to take a closer look.

The base coin material was coated with a copper-colored coating and on the front side we etched an image of a map in front of a compass, encircled by the laurel leaf & stars pattern. The back side of the coin was only engraved with the USN logo with a bit of elements and inscription, giving a contrast look compared to the front side.

The Navy Office of Information (NAVINFO) works with entertainment industry professionals to enhance public awareness of U.S. Navy technology and the highly trained personnel who make it function. Their mission is to provide guidance and expertise during all phases of the creative process, from concept to post-production, in order to ensure an authentic, accurate portrayal of the Navy’s assets, policies, and people in popular culture.

The office was founded in 1918. This office also maintains close relations and contacts in the entertainment industry with the goal of telling the US military’s story by facilitating accurate information and relevant themes and messages. If you have a project that meets their criteria and is willing to work to meet the Navy’s requirements for collaboration, a NAVINFO official is standing by to ensure your needs are met.

This custom challenge coin that they ordered from us was made to be awarded to the Navy Office of Information’s Chief. They requested us to build a luxurious and elegant coin, without too many nonessential decorations or elements to achieve a minimalistic look.

The edge of the coin was left smooth without carved lines or patterns. The rims on both sides were designed to be thin so the surfaces of the coin would look larger. In the center of both sides of the coin, we engraved the insignias of the US Navy and the NAVINFO.

USACE South Atlantic Division Coin

USACE South Atlantic Division Coin

USACE South Atlantic Division Coin

The US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) South Atlantic Division is one of eight regional offices overseeing military and water-resources design, construction, and operation in the eight states in the Southeast, the Caribbean, and Central and South America. The USACE South Atlantic Division designs and builds major military facilities for the Army and Air Force in the Southeast.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers works with the private sector to accomplish its military and water resources programs. By contracting with architect-engineers, construction, and many other types of companies, the South Atlantic Division designs, builds and operates dams, waterways, buildings, recreational, and other facilities throughout the region.

They requested us at Embleholics to build them a unique and personalized challenge coin. They wanted the coin to be shaped like a gear, with the teeth on the edge, and also have their insignias and emblems engraved on both sides of the coin. The coin should be colored in dark chrome plating, with other graphic elements painted with glossy colors.

We had our graphic designers make a mock-up for the shape of the custom coin, and also to digitalize the original emblems and insignias so they can be read and applied to the machined base material, by our computerized equipment. The result is as you can see in the photos on the right.
