Intelligence Operations Division Coin

The Intelligence Operations Division is a part of the Michigan State Police Department. It consists of the Cyber Section, Regional Communication Centers (RCCs), and The Michigan Intelligence Operations Center (MIOC).

The Cyber Section includes the Michigan Cyber Command Center, Computer Crimes Unit, and Michigan Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force. The RCCs are staffed 24/7 with highly-trained telecommunicators to respond to requests from law enforcement and citizens for public safety assistance. The Michigan Intelligence Operations Center (MIOC) provides 24-hour a-day statewide information sharing among local, state, and federal public safety agencies and private sector organizations in order to facilitate the collection, analysis, and dissemination of intelligence relevant to terrorism and public safety.

They contacted us to produce a custom challenge coin that would be awarded to their Operations Section officers. They wanted a classic design but with a contemporary flair, so, we had to make sure that the elements implemented in the coin design would go together nicely.

The concept design was gone through our digital design team and went through several revisions before it was approved and went through the sampling process. Once the mock-up was also approved by them, the computerized design went through our modern machinery which could handle almost any kind of design’s shape and form.

Homeland Security Investigations or HSI is the principal investigative arm of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, responsible for investigating transnational crime and threats, specifically those criminal organizations that exploit the global infrastructure through which international trade, travel, and finance move.

HSI’s mission is to investigate, disrupt, and dismantle terrorist, transnational, and other criminal organizations that threaten or seek to exploit the customs and immigration laws of the United States. It has broad legal authority to conduct federal criminal investigations into the illegal cross-border movement of people, goods, money, technology, and other contraband throughout the United States. HSI utilizes these authorities to investigate a wide array of transnational crimes.

The custom challenge coin that the HSI CBP Southwest Customs Revenue & Port Investigations ordered from us is distinctive and one-of-a-kind. It’s shaped like a scorpion with its tail encircling a round coin.

The scorpion was sculpted with our computerized machine and was coated with fine-quality paint. The round coin in the middle was engraved with graphics and decorations such as embossed insignias on one side, and a carved graphic design on the other. If you look closely enough, you can appreciate the level of detail that was executed by our state-of-the-art equipment to this coin.

Hanscom University Challenge Coin

Hanscom University, established in 2022, is a learning institution located at the Hanscom Air Force Base, Massachusett. Base officials will offer personal and professional development opportunities to members of the workforce through it, and the university’s focus areas include individual development, communication, leadership, and followership.

Instruction is open to military and civilian personnel assigned at Hanscom and geographically separated units, and organizers are looking at virtual options for personnel unable to attend. The program will also offer an awards program for personnel to showcase the knowledge they have gained.

We were given a task from Hanscom University to craft a custom challenge coin for them. They wanted something extraordinary, a challenge coin that somehow looked like a common coin, but different. They requested that the coin have a usual round shape, but most of the field part of the coin is hollowed out to create the shape of an airplane, to show their U.S. Air Force origin.

The coin has a similar design on both sides, so it’s easier work for us. But we had to make sure that the construction of the airplane sculpture in the middle of the coin was strong enough that it wouldn’t break or fall off when the coin was tossed around. The result is a unique and pretty challenge coin, as you can see in the photos to the right.

Geospatial Research Laboratory Coin

The Geospatial Research Laboratory (GRL) is a component of the Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC), a US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) laboratory organization. It was created in 2014 as a reorganization of the Topographic Engineering Center (TEC), a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers laboratory that had been based in Alexandria, Virginia.

The Geospatial Research Laboratory’s mission is to provide science, technology, and expertise in engineering and environmental sciences in support of our Armed Forces and the Nation to make the world safer and better. GRL conducts geospatial research, development, technology, and evaluation of current and emerging geospatial technologies that will help characterize and measure phenomena within the physical (terrain) and social (cultural) environments encountered by the Army.

They asked us to manufacture a custom challenge coin for them. The design was quite simple and contemporary, with modern aesthetical elements that are quite straightforward and free of complex traditional patterns. The graphic design they wanted to put on the coin was a globe map, with their logo on the center of the coin.

Flint Area Narcotics Group Coin or F.A.N.G., is a multijurisdictional drug team that investigates drug and criminal activity in Genesee County, Michigan. Established and operating since 1985, F.A.N.G.. detects and investigates drug-related crimes, and provides specialized services from membership agencies.

There are currently two street-level teams assigned at F.A.N.G. Each team investigates criminal and drug activity within Genesee County by targeting low to mid-level dealers in an effort to identify and target source dealers and organizations. In addition to law enforcement participants, FANG has numerous governmental entities including townships, villages, and cities throughout Genesee County that are participating members.

They contacted us and asked us to build them a custom challenge coin that also could function as a bottle opener. The design was quite simple, they wanted their mascot, a cobra, to be sculpted on the front side of the coin. On the back side, they wanted an inscribed illustration of the Grim Reaper holding drugs and money.

When we designed a coin that could be used as a bottle opener, we had several templates of the shape that we could apply to the base material so it would work well as a bottle opener. We also make sure that the construction of the coin will be strong enough to function as a bottle opener, by using the best materials and coatings.
