Old Salt’s Chiefs Mess Coin
According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, an ‘Old Salt’ means ‘Someone who has sailed for many years’ or ‘An experienced sailor who has been at sea so long he is “salty” from the ocean’. In the United States Navy, ‘Old Salt’ is a nickname given to the USS Nimitz (CVN-68), being one of the USA’s famous ships with a long naval history.
Old Salt’s Chiefs Mess is the term used for the network of chiefs within a command as well as the chiefs in the USS Nimitz. Often referred to as, “the Mess,” it allows chiefs to share knowledge and information with each other, develop as leaders, and act as a resource to their Sailors.
We were given the chance to manufacture a beautiful custom challenge coin for the Old Salt’s Chiefs Mess. They wanted a shiny, good-looking challenge coin, with a little bit of uniqueness. The distinction that makes the coin unique is we cut a small portion of the coin and shaped it like a wave.
On the front side of the coin, we engraved a relief of a U.S. Navy Chief covered in gold color, with an image of ocean waves in the background. On the back side, we sculpted an image of the USS Nimitz in silver, encircled by 5 stars and with a big ‘N’ in the foreground. The edge and the rim of the coin, along with the inscriptions are painted with gold finish.
