Naval Submarine Force Coin
The U.S. Submarine Force goes where few can go by exploring and operating in the undersea world. With roots dating back to the birth of the nation, submariners have a long history in the U.S. Navy. The submarine has a long history in the United States, beginning with the Turtle, the world’s first submersible with a documented record of use in combat.
U.S. Navy submarines are manned solely by volunteers from within the Navy. Because of the stressful environment aboard submarines, personnel is accepted only after rigorous testing and observation, as a consequence submariners have significantly lower mental hospitalization rates than surface ship personnel.
The US Naval Submarine Force ordered their custom challenge coin from us, and we had fun working on it. They wanted something that represent the Submarine Force, and also have all of their unit’s insignias to be placed on the coin. They also want to have different types of submarines to be engraved on the front side of the coin.
The original insignia of the U.S. Navy’s Submarine Service is a submarine flanked by two stylized dolphins named Castor and Pollux, so we used this as the inspiration to design the front side of the coin. And on the back side, we put all of their insignias and emblems and had to make sure each one of them was engraved perfectly.
