Hanscom University Challenge Coin

Hanscom University, established in 2022, is a learning institution located at the Hanscom Air Force Base, Massachusett. Base officials will offer personal and professional development opportunities to members of the workforce through it, and the university’s focus areas include individual development, communication, leadership, and followership.

Instruction is open to military and civilian personnel assigned at Hanscom and geographically separated units, and organizers are looking at virtual options for personnel unable to attend. The program will also offer an awards program for personnel to showcase the knowledge they have gained.

We were given a task from Hanscom University to craft a custom challenge coin for them. They wanted something extraordinary, a challenge coin that somehow looked like a common coin, but different. They requested that the coin have a usual round shape, but most of the field part of the coin is hollowed out to create the shape of an airplane, to show their U.S. Air Force origin.

The coin has a similar design on both sides, so it’s easier work for us. But we had to make sure that the construction of the airplane sculpture in the middle of the coin was strong enough that it wouldn’t break or fall off when the coin was tossed around. The result is a unique and pretty challenge coin, as you can see in the photos to the right.
