Boise Fire Station #5 Coin
Boise’s first fire department was created on January 24, 1876, with 28 volunteers involved. They provide fire suppression services within the city of Boise, Idaho, and contract services to two suburban fire districts including the city of Garden City and the village of Hidden Springs. Currently, the Boise Fire Department has 300+ full-time employees, 17 Fire Stations, a Hazardous Materials Team, an ARFF team, a Dive Team, and a Technical Rescue Team.
On January the 30th, 2023, Boise firefighters ran their final call from the current Fire Station 5 on 16th Street and are already transitioning to temporary locations. Station 5 is the city’s oldest operating fire station and was built in 1951. Soon construction will begin to tear down the building and rebuild a new one in the same location.
We had an opportunity to manufacture a custom challenge coin for Boise Fire Station #5. They requested the coin to be designed based on the Maltese Cross, the symbol of firefighters. They also asked for their mascot, the Sleepless Knights, to be sculpted on the front side of the coin, and the number 5 to be inscribed on the back.
The base metal material went through a computerized design and machining system that allows us to create different forms, precise angles, and even organic shapes such as the bulging areas on the surfaces of the coin, as you can see in the photos to the right.
