67th SOS Challenge Coin
The 67th Special Operation Squadron (67th SOS), also nicknamed the Night Owls, is an active United States Air Force unit operating the Lockheed MC-130J Commando II. The 67th SOS is tasked with flying single or multi-ship low-level air refueling missions for special operations helicopters, and infiltration, exfiltration, and resupply of special operations forces by airdrop or airland.
From their base at RAF Mildenhall, the 67th Special Operations Squadron’s MC-130P Combat Shadow flies single or multi-ship low-level air refueling missions for special operations helicopters, and infiltration, exfiltration, and resupply of special operations forces by airdrop or airland. The MC-130P primarily flies missions at low altitudes at night to reduce the probability of visual acquisition and intercept by airborne threats.
They ordered something unique for their custom challenge coin. As opposed to a common round coin shape, they wanted it to shape like an airplane. With only the embossed letterings of the ’67 SOS’, ‘Night Owls’, and ‘RAF Mildenhall’ on the sides of the airplane as the accents. The base material was left with a raw, unpainted look, making this coin has a vintage vibe. Only black paint is used for the inside of the letters to pop out the embossed inscriptions some more.
