SSBN 743 Challenge Coin
USS Lousiana (SSBN 743) is the 18th and last submarine of the Ohio class of ballistic missile submarines (SSBNs), and the fourth U.S. Navy ship to bear the name. She carries Trident ballistic missiles and has been in commission since 1997. The keel of Louisiana was laid on Oct. 23, 1992, and she was christened on July 27.
Louisiana’s crest recalls the traditions of the people of the state of Louisiana and the three previous U.S. Navy ships to bear the name Louisiana. The symbolism of the crest reminds both crews of their bond to the people and history of Louisiana, as well as the tradition of the naval veterans who have served aboard ships of the same name.
We had the opportunity to honor the USS Louisiana by crafting a custom challenge coin ordered by the U.S. Navy. They wanted a coin with a more modern vibe, without leaving the common U.S. Navy symbols such as the blue color and the trident.
We used a brass-colored metal as the base component for the coin. On the front side, we sculpted a relief of the submarine with some other graphic elements around it. The final touch for the coin is the shadow effect on the coin’s main color to give depth to the layout, and some painted colors on the relief.
