Guardians of The Night Coin
This coin was dedicated to the Guardians of the Night, or the military working dog unit of Fort Wainwright, Alaska. Fort Wainwright is a United States Army installation in Fairbanks, managed by U.S. Army Garrison Alaska (USAG Alaska) and the senior command is 11th Airborne Division.
The practice of using dogs for hunting is not a modern concept, but the idea of specific military working dog-training programs did not become popular until World War I. Contemporary dogs in military roles are also often referred to as police dogs, or in the United States and the United Kingdom as military working dogs (MWD), or K-9. Their roles are nearly as varied as those of their ancient relatives, though they tend to be more rarely used in front-line formations.
We had a chance to appreciate these guardians of the night by making them a cool custom challenge coin. It has the shape of an ordinary round metal coin but with some parts hollowed out to create the shape of a badge within the surface of the coin.
The machined and carved base material then went to the detailing process to apply the images and letterings wanted on the coin. Our computerized machinery allowed us to create shapes and make detailed carvings and perforations on different kinds of materials.
