USS Miguel Keith Coin
USS Miguel Keith (ESB-5) was originally a non-commissioned ship, with a USNS prefix but, like her sister ships, she was commissioned by the Navy, in order to provide combatant commanders greater operational flexibility in utilizing the ESBs in accordance with the laws of armed conflict. She is a Lewis B. Puller-class expeditionary mobile base, one of three such ships in service with the United States Navy as of late 2021.
This challenge coin was fabricated for the USS Miguel Keith’s Chief Petty Officer’s Mess. The CPO Mess is directly aft of the Bosun’s Locker and the Forward Enlisted Head. This was the lounge for the fifteen or so Chiefs on board. While smaller than the Enlisted Mess, it is slightly more comfortable.
They requested a one-of-a-kind extraordinary challenge coin with a lot of details and elements. On her maiden deployment to the US 7th Fleet based in Japan, the ship left Hawaii and then anchored off the Japanese coast near Nagasaki, Japan, at the US Naval base at Sasebo. They want to commemorate this event by having a Japanese gate or “Torii” to be engraved on one side of the coin.
This custom challenge coin also has many detailed reliefs and graphic elements, even small ones that need precise designing and machining. We’re happy that the result is one amazing and very artistic challenge coin.
