USS Alaska Challenge Coin
USS Alaska (SSBN-732), is a United States Navy Ohio-class ballistic missile submarine that has been operative since 1986. Alaska spent much of 1986 engaged in shakedown training for her two crews and in clearing up the many details that attend a new fleet ballistic missile submarine’s addition to the Fleet. Alaska’s current home port is Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay, Georgia.
The submarine Alaska is part of the Navy’s mission to provide a credible nuclear force, deterring aggression and providing assurance for our allies and partners. USS Alaska has accomplished many firsts throughout her time in service. Most recently Alaska was the first submarine to complete 100 strategic deterrent patrols.
We were given the task of building a custom challenge coin for their commanding officer. The design concept was pretty classic and conventional, with insignia reliefs and inscriptions on both sides of the coin, but what makes this coin a one-of-a-kind is it’s oval-shaped as opposed to round like a comment coin.
The elements applied to the coin were somewhat vintage or traditional. The choice of fonts and graphics were ones taken from the original US Navy and USS Alaska insignia and emblem. The coin was coated in matte gold finish, with glossy paints to color the engraved graphics.
