Roll Tide Challenge Coin
The origin of Roll Tide as a rallying cry can be traced to the University of Alabama, a cheer used to rally fans of the college’s athletics teams, known as the Crimson Tide. The University of Alabama, established in 1820 and opened to students in 1831, is the oldest and largest of the public universities in Alabama. The school was a center of activity during the American Civil War and the Civil Rights Movement.
The US Navy and Alabama Crimson Tide football team contacted us to manufacture their challenge coin. The team competes in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and the Western Division of the Southeastern Conference (SEC). Alabama holds a winning record against every current and former SEC school. The Associated Press ranks Alabama fourth in all-time final AP Poll appearances, with 59 through the 2021 season.
They requested to have their coin engraved with ‘Big Al’, the elephant mascot of the Crimson Tide, on one side, and the US Navy mascot, a peaked cap-wearing skull, on the other.
We decided to make a mock-up of both sides digitally so our clients could see if we could deliver the design that they wanted. On the Crimson Tide side, we made it colorful with glossy paints applied to the surfaces of the engravings. And on the USN side, we only put a color on the skull’s hat and left the rest of the metal unpainted.
