Hail State Challenge Coin
“Hail State” is the fight song and rally cry of Mississippi State University. The words and music were written by an ardent Mississippi State fan named Joseph Burleson Peavey. In 1937, he wrote “Men of State (Hail, Mississippi State)” as the winning entry in a school contest and earned fifty bucks for his trouble.
Hail State became the official hashtag of Mississippi State Athletics and Academics around the 2010 football season. It has trended nationally and internationally at different momentous moments in the recent athletic history of the university. Mississippi State was also the first university to paint a hashtag (#hailstate) onto a playing surface. This act and future hashtags were later banned by the NCAA for all institutions.
We had an opportunity to immortalize the hashtag into a custom challenge coin. The Navy Mustang of Mississippi State ordered a challenge coin, with the coin shaped like the map of the state, and requested the #hailstate to be inscribed on the front side. They also requested that both sides of the coin be colored maroon, just like the university’s color.
