Getchell Fire Challenge Coin

Getchell Fire is what the people of Snohomish, Washington, call their Fire Department. The city was founded in 1859 and named Cadyville after pioneer settler E. F. Cady and renamed Snohomish in 1871. By July 1888 the city had a system of water lines, and serious consideration was given to establish an organized fire company. In August of 1888, an official volunteer department was organized with a hose cart and 1000 feet of hose, paid for by citizen donations.

To become a firefighter in Snohomish County, all new hires, regardless of experience level are required to successfully complete the 14-week Snohomish County Fire Training Academy. As a recruit in the academy, all new hires are trained to become firefighters under South County Fire standards and in accordance with all applicable laws.

The fire department asked us to design and craft their custom challenge coin in the shape of the Maltese Cross. The Maltese Cross is a Fire Fighter’s badge of honor, signifying that he works in courage…A ladder rung away from death.

They also wanted their mascot, a bulldog that wears a firefighter helmet and chomps a firefighter’s hatchet, to be sculpted on the front side of the coin. The result is an eye-catching challenge coin in black & red.
