Wood Badge 135 Coin
Wood Badge is an advanced, national leadership course open only to Scouting volunteers and professionals. Scouters from Cub Scouting, Scouts BSA, Venturing, Sea Scouts, Explorers, and district and council Scouters all are welcome and belong here.
Wood Badge training was begun by Baden Powell in 1919 as a way to insure that the leaders of Scout troops were properly trained. Since then Wood Badge has been held worldwide, providing advanced leadership training to thousands of Scout leaders.
Much later, Baden-Powell sought a distinctive award for the participants in the first Gilwell course. He constructed the first award using two beads from the necklace he had recovered and threaded them onto a leather thong given to him by an elderly South African in Mafeking, calling it the Wood Badge.
We were asked to produce a Wooden Badge 135 custom challenge coin. It’s shaped to a pentagonal piece of metal, and they wanted us to carve the Wooden Badge logo on one side of the coin, and on the other was engraved with the Scouts logo, with the inscriptions of their values etched around it.
The base metal material of the coin was only painted on several areas, most of it was brushed and given some dark tone to show the depth of the engraved design.
