116th ASOS Challenge Coin
116th ASOS or Air Support Operations Squadron is a Washington National Guard unit assigned to the 194th Wing. Air Support Operations Squadron trains, equips, and maintains mission-ready air liaison, terminal attack control, and weather observation and forecasting elements to support the commanders of US Army units. The squadron also provides tactical command and control of airpower assets to the Joint Forces Air Component Commander and Joint Forces Land Component Commander for combat operations.
Their mission is to provide Joint Terminal Attack Controllers (JTACs) who support two Army National Guard Brigades and one Division, the 116th ASOS acts as the furthest extension of Air Force influence on the Joint battlefield. These Tactical Air Control Party members are close air support experts, advising ground commanders on use of Air Force assets in combat. JTACs serve as forward air controllers, winning battles by guiding weapons onto targets.
We had an opportunity to make them a custom challenge coin. It was really sharp and elegant challenge coin, with some details that applied neatly onto the coin. The concept design was pretty simple: Their insignia on one side, and their mascot, the Husky, on the other.
While the design concept is quite simple, every element on the coin was executed perfectly. From the base material, embossed lines, and letterings to the painted colors, all fit together charmingly.
