Navy SCB Challenge Coin
The SCB or Ship Characteristics Board was a unit of the United States Navy, and the purpose was to coordinate the creation of ‘ship characteristics’ that are essential to the design of naval combatants and auxiliaries. Coordination was called out for because the operators and the designers of ships had different interests, perceptions, and concepts.
SCB projects began in numeric sequence in 1946 and were originally listed in descending priority, but such prioritization was eventually dropped. Several of the early projects actually began in 1945. The SCB assigned numbers to its projects beginning in 1946. Not all projects would result in the construction of ships: some projects would remain conceptual only or would be superseded by later projects.
SCB 4 Unit commissioned us to produce their custom challenge coin. The basic concept was pretty simple, just an SCB emblem on one side, and on the other side they wanted to put their insignia. But they wanted a hexagonal shape for the coin as opposed to a round common one.
The coin was crafted beautifully, even with all the small graphics that needed to be embossed and etched on the coin. All the colors were painted on spot, too. It turned out to be a one-of-a-kind challenge coin.
