Navy VAQ Challenge Coin
Electronic Attack Squadron 139 (VAQ-139), also known as the “Cougars”, is an EA-18G Growler squadron of the United States Navy. They specialize in electronic attack and are currently stationed at Naval Air Station Whidbey Island, Washington.
VAQ-139 became operational on 1 July 1983 under the command of Commander Richard A. Clark at NAS Whidbey Island, Washington. The squadron participated in numerous exercises during its first year of operation. In April 2019, the Cougars were awarded the Navy’s Aviation Battle Efficiency Award (Battle “E”) for the third consecutive year (2016, 2017, and 2018).
They requested a one-of-a-kind custom challenge coin from us, so we started by choosing an unorthodox shape of the coin as the canvas. The outline of the coin’s shape is taken from a waving US Flag, and on the front side, we put an embossed image of their mascot, a cougar head. On the back side of the coin, they wanted a scenic view of Whidbey Island and its bridge to be engraved there, along with the Growler flying above the water.
We applied minimum colors on both sides, just blue background for the scenic view, and the red. white, and blue for the flag. The result is definitely not a common challenge coin, something special that they can be proud of.
