Coast Guard Challenge Coin
Known as the “Bulldog of the Bering,” the Coast Guard Cutter Alex Haley is 283-feet of heavy steel defending Alaskan and Arctic waters and protecting the lives of sailors braving those tumultuous seas. A former Navy rescue and salvage ship, Alex Haley is uniquely suited for a wide array of missions in “The Final Frontier” of Alaska. With a new look and a new name, the CGC Alex Haley was introduced to the Coast Guard July 10, 1999, and began its new life in Kodiak, Alaska.
And what is a Chief’s Mess? Aboard ships, in squadrons, and all commands the Chiefs are organized into a “Mess”, or the place where they eat, lounge, and have meetings. The Chief’s Mess holds great symbolic meaning for everyone in the USN from the newest recruit to the Chief of Naval Operations. This custom challenge coin that ordered from us is one that will represent the spirit of the USCGC Alex Haley and its Chief’s Mess.
This challenge coin is one with detailed engravings on both sides. With blue as the base color of the design, on one side we put the embossed image of the ship, and the bulldog mascot on the other. The Alaskan scenery is engraved as the background, and to complete the composition, some letterings and insignias are also etched on both sides of this dazzling challenge coin.
