The 509th Civil Engineer Squadron maintains and operates a 5,566-acre base complex. They wanted a custom challenge coin which also can be use as bottle opener, without being noticed as a bottle opener. So the basic design of this coin would be like a normal challenge coin, but we hollow out the middle of the coin with a half-circle shape. And then we designed constructed the tooth of the bottle opener that it won’t stick out too much and reveal its function. Once we got the right shape laid out, it’s only about putting other elements and ornaments such as the insignias and the inscriptions.
As you can see in the photos, we think we did quite well with the design. If you don’t look too close, it doesn’t look like a bottle opener. Even when you finally realize that it is, it still emanates the elegance of a beautiful challenge coin.
