The Seattle Fire Rescue Swimmer is a dedicated program of the Seattle Fire Department (SFD) that employs rescue swimmers for water rescue operations. These Rescue swimmers are available around the clock to respond to water emergencies in the Seattle area, and they also work with other SFD units, including rescue watercraft teams, to maximize response capabilities.
The SFD has a dedicated rescue swimmer program, with ongoing training and development. These Rescue Swimmers undergo rigorous training, including cold water training and various rescue techniques. They learn to handle combative victims, perform breath-hold dives, and free themselves from entanglement. The SFD’s foundation has donated equipment to expand water response capabilities, including rescue watercraft.
We had the opportunity to appreciate these Rescue Swimmers when we built challenge coins for them. They asked for a simple coin with a conventional circle shape, with the SFD Rescue Swimmer logo printed on one side, and an image of their cartoon mascot, a ratfish wearing shades, sipping a cocktail.
As you can see from the photos, the details achieved with our hi-tech machine are superb. From the nicely etched lines and the brushed metal surface of the coin, from the colors of the painted mascot with all the small details. The tiny ‘SFD’ lettering on the medal worn by the mascot is even readable.
