The “Firehouse Leadership’s Red, Green, and Blue” model is a framework that categorizes leadership styles into three distinct “modes,” using the colors of a traffic light as a powerful analogy. It’s designed to help leaders consciously choose the most appropriate style for the situation at hand, much like a firefighter assesses a blaze to decide the best tactic.

Red Leadership, or the Directive Commander, is the style used when a building is actively on fire. There’s no time for debate or consensus. The incident commander gives clear, direct, and unambiguous orders to save lives and property.

Green Leadership, or the Collaborative Facilitator, is the style used at the fire station between calls. It’s a time for training, planning, maintaining equipment, and discussing how to improve future responses. It’s about building the team and its capabilities.

Blue Leadership, or the Analytical Problem-Solver, is the style used by a Fire Investigator after the fire is out. They don’t command the hose lines, nor are they building team morale. They are methodically collecting data, analyzing evidence, and determining the root cause of the fire.

And the “8 Rules” are a complementary and highly practical set of principles that guide a leader on how to behave within the Red, Green, and Blue leadership modes. They are the actionable guidelines that bring the color framework to life.

The custom challenge coin that we made was based on this concept. Our client wanted something that represents the colors and the “8 Rules” on both sides of the coin. So we have our team of graphic designers to lay out all of the elements for our team of fabricators to turn them into the final coin that you see in the photos.
