A leadership challenge coin is a custom coin made to recognize a small group at the top of an organization. Founders, a board of directors, an advisory board or an executive team typically receive them. Orders tend to be small, personal and closely reviewed by the person commissioning them.
Why Companies Order Coins for Their Leadership
Leadership coins mark moments that belong to a few people. Founders order them to celebrate a company milestone. Boards present a board of directors coin to an outgoing chair or a departing director. Some companies honor the people who started the business, often years after the founding. Advisory boards close out a term with one.
A coin suits this kind of recognition. It is small enough to carry and personal enough to keep for decades. It also avoids the look of a standard corporate award. Companies planning wider staff programs can browse our custom corporate challenge coins.
Leadership coins often reach beyond the original honorees. Companies give some to the wider team and keep others for future recognition. Some businesses also order corporate team coins so the whole staff carries a matching design.
Should a Company Coin Use the Company Logo?
Company logos are drawn for screens. Many are wide and flat, with thin type that reads well on a website. At coin size, that type can fill in and lose its edges. Gradients and multiple colors need separate enamel wells, and small color areas crowd each other fast. Our BAE Systems project shows how much detail a logo can carry.
The logo is the right answer when a company has a strong, simple mark. A bold symbol with two or three colors converts to metal cleanly. It also tells anyone holding the coin who issued it.
Long wordmarks, fine lines and heavy color make a logo harder to use. So does a coin that needs to say more than the logo can. A symbol from the company name often carries more meaning. An object tied to the work, a founding date or a place from the company’s history can also anchor a design. Our engineering practice coins show how a trade’s own imagery can lead a coin.
Using the logo also requires permission. A registered mark generally needs approval from the company or someone authorized to act for it. If you are ordering for your leadership team, confirm with your marketing or legal department before finalizing the design. We work from artwork the customer is authorized to supply.
What Goes on an Executive or Leadership Coin?
Most executive challenge coin designs draw from a short list of elements:
- Names and titles of each honoree
- A founding date or milestone year
- A company symbol, taken from the logo or designed separately
- A motto, where the company has one
- A restrained finish such as antique gold, bronze or silver
This audience tends toward antique metals and limited enamel color. Personalization comes in two forms. A shared design lists every name on one face. Individually marked coins give each recipient a piece with their own name or title. A founders challenge coin often lists every founder on the same face.

About This Red Bison Coin
Red Bison Advisory Group, a technology company based in Bellevue, Washington, commissioned this coin to honor its four leaders. They asked for something delicate and representative, built on symbols in place of the company logo. The company name supplied the central image. The country supplied the second.
The finished coin includes:
- A bison head raised in antique gold relief, facing left with a flowing mane
- A red enamel ring naming all four honorees: Martha Bejar, Juan Alfonso, Todd Owens and Bill Owens
- The year 2012, when the company was founded, at the base of the ring
- A diamond-cut edge that frames the face and catches light from every angle
- The American flag on the reverse
A two-image design is harder than it looks. With only a bison and a flag carrying the coin, proportion and placement decide everything. No secondary graphic or busy background is there to absorb a small error. The bison had to fill its field without crowding the names. The flag needed enough room to read clearly across the reverse.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a leadership challenge coin?
A leadership challenge coin is a custom coin that recognizes a small group at the top of an organization, such as founders, a board or an executive team.
Can a company order coins just for its founders or board?
Yes. Companies often commission coins only for their founders, board members or leadership team. The standard 50-coin minimum still applies.
Should a company coin use the company logo?
Only if the logo holds up in metal. Simple, bold marks with few colors work well. Wide wordmarks, thin type and gradients often need a redesign or an alternative symbol.
What can go on a coin instead of a logo?
A symbol from the company name, an object tied to the business, a founding date or a place connected to the company’s history.
Why do some logos not work well on a coin?
Most logos are drawn for screens. Thin type, gradients and many small color areas lose clarity at coin size.
Can individual names or titles be added to executive coins?
Yes. A coin can list several names on one face, or each coin can carry a single recipient’s name or title.
Can we use our company logo on a challenge coin?
Yes, if the person ordering is authorized to approve its use. We work from artwork the customer is cleared to supply.
What is the minimum order?
The minimum order is 50 coins. This applies to leadership coins made for a small group.
