The Fabrication X Texas Support – McGregor is the dedicated, on-site manufacturing and metal shop that supports the relentless testing and development of rocket engines at SpaceX’s crucial McGregor test facility. It’s a key enabler of the company’s fast-paced, vertically integrated engineering culture, and is located at SpaceX’s rocket development facility in McGregor, Texas.

While McGregor is famous for engine testing, it’s a massive complex with many capabilities. Logically, a dedicated area or cell within the fabrication shop would be tasked with supporting a classified government program. This ensures physical security and compartmentalization of information.

To keep this work separate from the commercial Starlink and public-facing Starship work, SpaceX would use an internal codename like “RSAX” on work orders, drawings, and internal schedules. This prevents leaks and ensures only cleared personnel are aware of the project’s details.

The custom challenge coin that we did for them was a contemporary-looking, quite simple in design, but still elegant. They only wanted us to put their logos on both sides, with the use of glossy solid paint as the finish on some of the surfaces. We also applied a brush effect on some of the patterned surfaces to give depth to the design.

These excellent finishes could be achieved with our cutting-edge equipment at our workshop, with the help of our experienced graphic designers, who helped lay out the graphic elements as 2D images, before it was read by our computerized machinery and turned into the final product.
