The 65th Air Base Group is a U.S. Air Force unit based at Lajes Field, Terceira Island, Azores, Portugal, operating under the 86th Airlift Wing, which in turn is part of the Third Air Force under U.S. Air Forces in Europe – Air Forces Africa (USAFE-AFAFRICA). Its subordinate units include several squadrons, which handle everything from infrastructure and logistics to communications, security, and financial support.
The group provides a foundational base and en route support for U.S. Department of Defense assets, allied nations, and other authorized aircraft transiting through Lajes Field, including partners from the Netherlands, Germany, Canada, France, Italy, Belgium, Colombia, Venezuela, and the U.K.
They gave us a task of fabricating a ‘For Excellence’ custom challenge coin. It’s a general phrase used to recognize outstanding performance, achievement, or service. They wanted something conventional but elegant challenge coin with nothing out of the ordinary, just a round metal coin with reliefs of their symbols and insignias.
It’s our job to make this kind of clean and simple design look extraordinary. You can see that this coin consists of small details such as insignias, logos, and inscriptions. The design was laid out digitally by our team of designers with years of experience designing coins and medals. All of the thin lines and narrow surfaces were carved well, and colored properly using our high-tech equipment and premium materials.
