the story behind the coin

The U.S. Marshals Service is the oldest federal law enforcement agency. It was established in 1789 when the federal judicial system was set up. President George Washington appointed over a dozen U.S. Marshals to oversee the nation’s federal courts.

Over time, these U.S. Marshals were also asked to tackle other high-profile tasks, such as:

  • Policing the “Old West”
  • Identifying Confederate spies during the Civil War
  • Enforcing Prohibition-era laws

U.S. Marshals challenge coins honor federal law enforcement agents and celebrate the important work they do. They’re highly collectible coins that take cues from the traditional military challenge coins that have existed since World War I.
