U.S. Embassy Riga Coin
In 1991 the United States officially acknowledged Latvia’s independence from the defunct Soviet Union and established a new embassy in Riga. Construction on a new embassy compound was completed in 2011. Since regaining its independence, Latvia has embraced democracy and the principles of an open market.
The interwar period consolidated the diplomatic relations between the two countries, and several bilateral agreements were signed. Despite the Great Depression of 1929 and the considerable geographical distance, economic, trade, and cultural relations were established.
We were commissioned to build the U.S. Embassy in Riga a custom challenge coin. The coin was going to be awarded to the Diplomatic Security Service special agents assigned there. They wanted the coin to be a beautiful memento that represents the identity of the United States and Latvia.
On one side of the coin, we engraved a red & white Latvian pattern as the background. the Latvian pattern symbolizes the imbuement of the world around us with personality and purpose, protecting us, harmonizing energies, and promoting prosperity, fertility, and good fortune, synchronizing to the rhythms of the seasons.
On the other side, we made a relief of the famous Freedom Monument of Riga, with the background of The United States and Latvia flags engraved and colored next to each other.
