State Patrol Challenge Coin
The Washington State Patrol (WSP) is the state police agency for the U.S. state of Washington. Organized as the Washington State Highway Patrol in 1921, it was renamed and reconstituted in 1933. In 1988, the Washington State Patrol (WSP) became just the third state law enforcement agency to receive accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA).
The agency is charged with the protection of the Governor of Washington and the grounds of the Washington State Capitol; security aboard the vessels and terminals of the Washington State Ferries; law enforcement on interstate and state highways in Washington; and providing specialized support to local law enforcement including laboratory forensic services, mobile field forces during periods of civil unrest or disaster, and tactical teams.
They wanted something unsophisticated and down-to-earth for their challenge coin, so the challenge for us is how to put all the elements together and make the coin be something simple yet charming. So we choose to use a monochromic color scheme for the whole design, using only a grayscale color palette.
The WSP insignia was beautifully engraved on the front side of the coin, with black as the background color, and the matte gray finish as the coin’s base color goes well with it. On the back side, we carved the map of the Washington State with the US flag pattern inside of it, and just a small blue paint in one of the stripes for a nice colorful accent.
