The Minnesota State Patrol is the state police agency for the U.S. state of Minnesota. It is a uniformed, full-service law enforcement agency that is part of the Minnesota Department of Public Safety (DPS). Its primary mission is to ensure a safe and secure environment on Minnesota’s roadways and to provide professional law enforcement services throughout the state.

The Radio Communications Unit of the Minnesota State Patrol is a critical, though often “behind-the-scenes,” part of the agency. It is not a unit of troopers with radios, but rather the team of technical experts responsible for designing, building, maintaining, and managing the entire statewide radio system that the State Patrol and many other public safety agencies rely on.

They ordered us a custom challenge coin to be awarded to their personnel, and they requested a design that has a lot of detailed small elements. Started with a standard round-shaped coin as the base design, with an image of their mascot: A skull wearing a headset and aviator sunglasses. The mascot was engraved and colored with the U.S. Flag pattern on the sunglasses, and encircled with the embossed image of the U.S. Highway shield symbols.

On the other side, they requested a relief map of Minnesota State on the back, and the Minneapolis cityscape in the foreground, with the images of trees, a helicopter, and the logo ‘Dispatch 911’ all engraved and painted with enamel paint. Finalized with the inscription of their motto etched around these images.
