A Police Support Unit or PSU is not a regular patrol unit that responds to daily 911 calls. Instead, it is a specialized, highly mobile team of officers trained and equipped to handle specific situations that require a coordinated group response. Think of them as a tactical “toolkit” for a police department, used for planned operations or large-scale incidents.
Common functions of a PSU include: Public Order and Crowd Control, Major Event Security, Large-Scale Searches, Disaster Response, and Tactical Support.
It’s crucial to distinguish a PSU from a SWAT(Special Weapons and Tactics) team: PSU focuses on crowd management and large-scale incidents. Their “adversary” is typically a crowd or a large, chaotic situation, while SWAT focuses on high-risk tactical operations. Their “adversary” is typically an armed and barricaded suspect, a hostage-taker, or a terrorist. SWAT uses more advanced weaponry and breaching tactics.
We were given the task of crafting a really cool custom challenge coin for the North Town PSU. They wanted something different and original, so instead of using an ordinary-looking round coin, they asked us to fabricate a coin with a rectangular shape.
And on the sides of it, they only want the engraved image of their badge on the front, and an image of a PSU car with one of their personnel ready to come out of it, with the inscribed ‘Jump Out Boys’ slogan etched on the top.
The coin was finished using one color, black, as the background, and blue for some elements on the badge relief, giving this extraordinary challenge coin a tough and rough vibe.
