The 644th Combat Communication Squadron is one component of the 36th Contingency Response Group and an essential resource available to United States Air Force leadership in responding to the growing number of fast-moving contingency deployments that today’s Air Force experiences in the Pacific area of responsibility.
Their mission is to rapidly deploy combat Airmen and communication support in responding to contingencies in INDOPACOM (US Indo-Pacific Command), one of six geographic unified combatant commands of the United States Armed Forces, headquartered in Honolulu, Hawaii. And their vision is to lead an expeditionary communications force enabling agile, resilient, survivable, and interoperable C5ISR capabilities across INDOPACOM.
We were appointed to build a one-of-a-kind challenge coin for the 644th CCS. They requested something unique, a coin in the shape of an ellipse with pointy ends, like a football, and a small rectangular banner on the bottom. The base design was a map of the INDOPACOM area, with crossed Gurkha knives and the flags of the USA and Guam on one side of the coin, and the mascot of the 664th CCS, the Dragon, on the other side.
Since this is quite a simple design, we had to make sure that everything was produced and machined perfectly. from the embossed letterings, the etched lines of the map, and the details on the flags, to the tribal-styled logo of the dragon. For the surface, we applied a glossy metallic black with red pearls for most of the coin, and some other colors just for the flags and the mascot.
