Harvey Funk Post 494 is a local veterans’ organization in Glen Burnie, Maryland, that is part of the national American Legion. Its name honors all prisoners of war and missing service members, while specifically memorializing a local hero and former POW, Harvey J. Funk. He was a U.S. Army Air Corps Technical Sergeant during World War II. His B-17 bomber was shot down over Germany in 1944, and he was held as a Prisoner of War (POW).

After the war, he returned home, became a prominent member of the Glen Burnie community, and was a founding member and the first Commander of this American Legion Post. Naming the post after him, a former POW, to honor his personal sacrifice and service. You can find them on social media and their website, where they post about community events, fundraisers, and meetings. They are an active part of the Glen Burnie community.

We were given the task to build a custom challenge coin for their event in September 2025. They wanted something simple, clean, and straightforward. Just a logo of the POW-MIA on the front side of the coin, and the insignias of the US Legions and some inscriptions on the back.

There was no unnecessary pattern or relief on this coin. The main colors used were glossy black and raw silver, which give the coin a sense of grief & honor, while all of the legions’ insignias are all painted with their original colors to the smallest details.

We at Embleholics will help you make your ideas and designs into reality. Don’t hesitate to ask us for a quote or estimate.
