Most military unit coins are either 1.75 inches or 2 inches in diameter. 1.75 inches is the traditional size and the one most associated with a carried coin. 2 inches is chosen when the crest or the amount of text needs more room.

What tends to drive the choice in unit orders specifically:

  • Detail in the insignia. Unit crests and distinctive insignia often carry fine line work, mottos in small type and multiple colour fields. These read better at 2 inches, and a dense crest shrunk to 1.75 inches can lose the detail that makes it recognisable.
  • How the coin will be carried. A coin meant to live in a pocket and survive a coin check favours 1.75 inches. A presentation or commemorative piece can go larger.
  • Precedent. Many units have an established size across previous coins, and matching it matters more than any other consideration. Check what the last one was before deciding.
  • Budget at quantity. At 200 pieces the difference between the two sizes is real money.
