Yes. The same die can be run in a different plating, a different finish or different enamel colours. Changing the finish is not a design change, so no new tooling is required and the reorder keeps the saving.
This is a useful thing to know, because it lets a single design carry different meanings:
- A gold version for presentation or award pieces, with silver or nickel for general issue
- An antique finish for a commemorative run, against a polished version of the same coin
- Different enamel colours marking each year, each class or each deployment
- A black nickel variant for a specialist element within a larger unit
Organisations running an annual coin often use this deliberately. The crest stays constant, the finish changes, and the set becomes collectable in a way that a repeated identical coin does not.
Two conditions apply. We retain molds and production information, but a mold more than five years old may need replacing. And if the artwork itself changes, rather than just the finish, that may count as a design change and require new tooling.
Production still takes 45 to 50 days from approval, since only the design stage is removed.
Tell us the original order details and what you want changed, and we will confirm whether the existing mold covers it.
