Watch Duty is a nonprofit, volunteer-driven service that provides real-time information about wildfires and firefighting efforts. Launched in August 2021, it initially covered three counties in Northern California and has since expanded its coverage to 22 states across the U.S., including California, Oregon, Texas, and Hawai’i.
The platform operates through a network of over 150 volunteers, including active and retired firefighters, dispatchers, and first responders. These volunteers monitor radio scanners, satellite imagery, and official sources to deliver timely updates on fire incidents, evacuation orders, shelter locations, air quality, and wind conditions. Users can access this information via the Watch Duty app, available on both iOS and Android devices.
They asked us to craft them a shiny and memorable challenge coin. The design is somewhat simple, yet they want it to be bright and shining, to symbolize the image of a flame that was carved on the surfaces of the coin. There were not many elements put on the design, just their logo, the green flame on the front side, and a red flame relief on the other. With some minimum lettering etched on the rims of the coin, and some circular line pattern carved as the background.
We colored the base material with a shining gold finish, and some paints on some segments of the design, such as the logo, the small flames, and the coin’s rims. We only used high-quality paints specialized for metal surfaces to achieve the best glossy look, as you can see from the photos of this beautiful coin.
