The “South Dakota – Port of Entry” is some designated highway locations in South Dakota where commercial vehicles, mostly trucks, must stop for inspection and compliance with state and federal regulations. These facilities are operated by the South Dakota Department of Public Safety, Division of Highway Patrol.
Its purpose is to enforce commercial vehicle regulations, including size, weight, safety, and registration, to collect fuel taxes and check International Registration Plan (IRP) and International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA) compliance, and also to ensure that out-of-state commercial carriers are legally operating within South Dakota. South Dakota has several ports of entry located on major highways near the borders.
The South Dakota Department of Public Safety entrusted the manufacturing of their challenge coin to us at Embleholics. They wanted something elegant but also modern, with some contemporary graphical elements and images that represent the Port of Entry division. They wanted their painted and embossed logo on one side of the coin, and a colored relief of a semi-truck on the other.
The base material used for this coin is a brass-colored metal, with a brushed effect for a matte look. The engraved logo and the semi-truck image were etched beautifully onto the surfaces, and the colors were accurately applied to the logos and the relief. The carved circular line pattern on the fields of the coin added an attractive accent as the background to the main images.
