What Goes on a DHS Challenge Coin?

Most DHS challenge coins combine a few core design elements. Component seals and insignia are common centerpieces, along with unit or field office identifiers that tie the coin to a specific team. Mottos and mission statements often appear along the coin’s edge or reverse side. 

Mission dates, badge numbers, and rank are also frequently included to personalize the coin for a specific recipient or unit.

Can You Use Official DHS Seals on a Challenge Coin?

Reproducing an official federal seal or insignia is restricted under federal law (18 U.S.C. § 701), and typically requires authorization from the component itself.

We don’t reproduce official DHS or component seals without that authorization. However, if you have artwork approved by your agency, or public domain versions of your component’s emblem, we can work from that directly. 

If you’re not sure what your agency allows, we’d recommend confirming with your component’s public affairs or legal office before finalizing a design. We’re happy to advise on design options that reflect your unit’s identity without relying on a restricted seal.

How the Custom Coin Design Process Works

Every coin project goes through the following steps.

• Concept. Send us a concept, a rough sketch, or just an idea. Our team will build a professional design around it, at no additional cost. Along the way, you can decide coin sizes, metals, finishes, edges, colors, shapes, and specialty manufacturing options. 

• Proof & revisions. You’ll review a digital proof and can request unlimited revisions before anything goes to production, so the design is exactly right before we manufacture.

• Production. Once you approve the final proof, we move into production. Most orders are completed within 45–50 days of artwork approval. If you’re working against a ceremony date, rush production of your DHS coins is available to help you hit it.

• Shipping. Shipping is free within the continental U.S.

About This Homeland Security Coin Project

This coin was designed for a specific Department of Homeland Security program, built around that office’s own identity rather than a generic template: FEMA’s Emergency Management Institute, for a graduation class dated October 23, 2014. 

The customer came to us with much of the concept already developed, and our team carried it through to a finished design, staying true to the original idea.

Shape. The coin uses an unconventional Pentagon-shaped layout, a less common choice that sets it apart from the standard round or shield-shaped coins seen across most federal and military collections.

Front. The front centers on a dimensional silver American flag, with the class motto “It’s Only a Pilot” and the graduation date beneath it.

The surrounding pentagon edges are lettered with the training cycle: Plan Emergency, Organize & Equip, Train, Exercise, Evaluate, alongside Leaders and Academy.

Back. On the reverse, a DHS-style eagle and shield emblem sits at the center, with “U.S. Department of Homeland Security” lettered around it.

The inner ring spells out “Emergency Management Institute,” and the outer band names the class’s core values: Teamwork, Diversity, Selfless Service, Mentoring, and Loyalty.

Raised and recessed detailing gives the design real depth without overwhelming the surrounding lettering.
